My first set of decks were a pair of belt drive Soundlab decks, that my grandad bought for me........ I think they are in my mam's loft now.

If you're just starting up, you might as well get Technics straight away. There is a world of difference in using belt drives and using direct drives.

If your heart is set on decks then don't skimp - get technics 1200's or 1210's.
I'd say 1200's but I'm biased (silver rules!) - remember there is absolutely no difference apart from colour.
Technics are about as robust as a Sherman tank. I believe that, even though I am not particuarly experienced in Sherman tanks .

There are other decks on the market now that may (or may not) be better. Vestax are doing ones at the moment but I have never tried them so cannot judge. Ask on here about them, as I am sure some folk have got experience of them so will be a better judge than me

I'd say go with Technics.

I've had my Technics for 12 years and they are still flawless (though could be doing with a clean). I think I paid about £550 for them then - brand new, so my technics have cost me just over £20 A F**CKIN YEAR. That's less than a round in a London boozer a year! Just do it.

Definitely Technics.... you cant beat them for reliability and for learning to mix.

My first decks that I learnt on where a pair of soundlabs .... they where awful but they did the job. Before that it was tapes with a pair of scissors, some cellotape a pause button on a tape deck and hours of patience..... and learning to swear under your breath when you had cellotaped the tape together and you realised there was a twist in it.

lmao :D  Me too :D Proper oldskool mixing :)

Even now I remember clear as a bell just how buzzing I was when I created a tape 'mix' using the 'What can you do for me ?' vocal from Utah Saints & then cut to the 'Just dance & move your body' from Bassheads :jumpin: :$

My 1st decks were KAM belt drives & I'm forever grateful to them in a strange way coz Technics are a breeze afterwards... bit like learning to drive in a lefthand drive car....blindfolded.... with an arm tied behind your back....

My first decks were one Sony belt drive, which had a little knob on the front for speed control, that I found underneath the stairs of my brothers student gaff, and then one JVC belt drive (with a little dial on the side this time!) from a second hand shop which I bartered down to £20. And I'll tell you what they did the job!

My first Technics I stole from Essex Uni SU Ents. I'd DJed the night before but forget my coat when I left. When I went back to get it I spotted they'd left out the decks, so I went home got a massive bag used for dirty laundry, put the decks in, got my jacket and went home. They weighed a fookin ton as well! Then I went back to Uni to the SU and said my jacket was missing. We trotted down to the dance hall and they said "they've took the decks as well", to which I replied "the bastards"!

I learned on my mums old HMV deck (had 16,33,45,78 lol) and a cheap NEC deck that I bought from a charity shop, both belt drive, with a Tandy mixer that didn't have a crossfader, instead channel switches that 'rocked' left to right, hmmm tricky, but good fun :D

Tape edits, copying sounds off the electro series and the doug-e-fresh album and hearing the results back as they morphed and did weird things, top narna :king:

Buy Technics if you are serious about it/can afford it!

:)

My first decks are the ones Ive still got Technics 1210's

I bought them in aug 2004 and even tho I havent been on them very much in the last 8 months :$ I love them to pieces and have never regretted buying them

I first had a go on technics years and years ago, then later on some geminis. I couldnt mix for toffee on geminis as I was far too heavy handed  :$

Id deffo reccomend getting technics, you'll never regret it

i started on one technics and one push-the-button-and-the-deck-slides-out thingy back in 89....to this day i still don't own my own set. sad isn't it.

Buy technics..or youll just end up frustrated. (you might be frustrated anyway, but thats none of my concern).
