I think we are finally ditching the Dial Up at work, and getting broadband for the whole place via a wireless router.

The seperate phone line is being sacked off, and the broadband hub/router is going to be attached to the Boss's computer. Usually, Im in control of such things, but theyve got somebody in to do it, and I dont know whats going on exactly.

My question is, previously I could surf the net at coffee breaks and dinner times, use MSN etc whilst I had my dinner.........but now, I think I may be at risk of being logged and traced what Im saying and where I go, for how long and when etc.......which will be a mare.

Are there any neat programs I can install on my machine to help mask this data? - just in case.......

Its not a big company, they will be spending bare bones on it really, Im not expecting any fancy snooper technology, aside from anything what will come with the gear itself. It might just be a non-issue, and a simple unmonitored access.......but I wouldnt like to loose my job if I kept popping on Ebay or MSN randomly through the day like I do now. Know what I mean.....lol.......or If Im calling the bosses names for any reason, I wouldnt want them to have a log of it, hahahaha.

Just being precautious ;)

Cheers

does your company have an IT Policy that is readily available for you to read, have they ever made any restrictions and demands regarding the internet before ? each company id different...........the company i work for lets us cruise the net, use ebay etc, so long as it does not impact on our work they are happy with that (im using it now, lol) so long as no porrno etc is dl (or we get the sack!)

Nah, its not the sort of place to have any official policies, except when it comes to covering thier arse.....which is understandable. Im sure they tread a thin line with official ways youre supposed to do things sometimes, but they wouldnt ever go to the extent of drawing up an internet usage policy, or any other policy for that matter. Aslong as they cant be shafted, thats thier main concern.

Basically, Im damn lucky to get on it at any time at all, and having worked there for 10 years Ive got used to it being a perk that I can catch up at break time and lunch time or if we are slack and theres nothing much to do - which can get that way in engineering these days.

So, the sort of unwritten official position is no internet use at all, and to go on where its necessary (to source obscure materials and components etc), and its primarily for Email, recieving large files down the wire for our work.

Im suprised they havent twigged on that I go on, cos it was a dial up, and they must have bills for half an hour every day at 12.32 lol.

Im being a bit paranoid really, but I like my privacy. Im a hard worker, I wouldnt abuse it, but thats not the point really I suppose, in thier eyes they are loosing money, which is fair comment.

Sounds to me like all they will be doing is a simple replacement of your isdn to adsl mate so unless they get someone into to mess around with your server and enable such services that control internet access i am sure you will be ok. I am sure you would know if they were stamping down on the net abuse if they decided to do so and like you have stated i am suprised they haven't twigged with the random small call charges on the bill at dinner time lol

from what i remember you have posted in the past all you have got is pc's and you share files between them on a workgroup rather than domain?

if so youll be fine...the router will probs have limited browsing history in the admin page, hold 4 pages worth and keep dumping it and overwriting itself - or it might not even have that

i wouldnt worry mate...unless the boss puts an msn convo sniffer on there so he can read what people talk about on msn on the ip range :|
