Hi peepz just wondered if any1 had a yamaha motif ? im saving up for 1 of these beasts but as i can only get 1 for around a grand so im gona be saving for a while :( im using a yamaha psr 175 to make my tunes at the mo n its just not good enuf , way to old . just wonderd if theres any1 on ere that uses hardware 2 make there tunes , or do we all use software nowadays ?

id love to no what hardware or software any1 is using 2 make there tunes

Doddy it is mostly software now as Technology is so much better & gets better all the time! more & more Pro's have sold there Hardware & left themselfs with just Sofware maybe keeping a few bits! if your spending a grand mate get a powerfull PC & Cubase i have some Cubase vidoes you can watch i will send them to you if you choose Cubase.I use Logic which is a wicked program but Mac's can be expensive but they just totaly take the piss out of PC & Windows so i can't really help you with Cubase! but them vidoes should help!

If you get Cubase you can learn Dynamics which i think you should learn about Compression,Side Chaining,Limiting,Mastering Etc! Etc! Get a PC mate!

PS:I use to have Hardware makes not difference it is what is in your head! i find Harware is more for collectors than actually Producing music!

Bullshit imo. Keeping things with FULL control and having each synth/module separate and through it's own channel on a mixing desk simply can't be beaten.

Look around the majority of studios thesedays and they are mostly hardware based with software to control/sequence/record.

Choose PC software only if
A/ you are on a budget
B/ you want to sound like a lot of dullards using standard preset and boring drumz :p

I got a Soundcraft Ghoust 32 channel right here i don't use it anymore i want rid of it Technology is wicked! i don't need it now! There is no difference in channel seperation at all when i have my sounds seperated in Logic than on my desk,i have been to big studio's getting vocals recorded all that baffle! had my tunes mixed down on old analogue desks in a studio we had to pay for!

Your wrong about Hardware! Producers are using them less & less! Olav Basoski had loads of studio gear compressor worth £25,000 he sold everything & now is only using Logic Studio with top of the range plug ins & his mix downs sound wicked because he understands the science of sound!

I can put Hardware synths on each channel on Logic like my Alpha Juno & it sounds fuking awsome so i can take the Juno to another level with fresh new Technology!

I don't want us to confuse Doddy but Doddy the best you advice you can take is of people who are actually making music & getting tunes out like this guy!

OlavBasoski.nl All done on Logic Studio! no Hardware at all!

I can't express it's not what gear you have it's whats in your head!

When I started out producing I ran into a lot of matters I couldn't get my head around. I was fortunate to get to know quite some people who were experienced in the art of recording and mixing, and I asked their heads off about everything that was misty to me.

I've also met a lot of folks who just were not interested in sharing any of their knowledge with others. Oooh, it's all veeery secret, ooooh I can not tell y ou how I do this or that, cos that's my special little thingy...
PFFFFF yeah right, well you know what, I'll buy me a book on the subject, arrogant twat... So yeah, I read a lot of books on micing, mixing, mastering, processing, etc.

For that reason, a couple of years ago I started writing short articles on my website about these things, for anyone who was interested. I've placed the older articles here, with some new ones too. If there's anything that bothers you or you can't find your answers here, let me know, I may just decide to write something up about it! Have fun!

Hmmmmmmmmmm.......

If you had posed this question 3-4 years ago I would have said grab as many keyboards as you can.

However, the last few years have seen a giant leap forward in the quality of soft synths and, of course, they work out a lot cheaper. Don`t by any cheap shit, simply buy the best there is out there. Spectrasonics is one of the best - their sampling CD`s are also second to none.

Trouble is when you buy a workstation keyboard and you are using PC sequencing software much of the functions within the Workstation (sequencing/ drum patterns) become redundant as they are duplicated within the PC and are often easier to use and more accessible. Most people use the soundbanks within the PC and then that is it. Cheaper ways of buying soundbanks and storing them within your PC.

My advice would be to buy the most expensive PC you can afford, some decent software (I am a Cubase freak so would highly recommend Cubase 4 which is simply stunning) buy the best mother keyboard you can (we have an 88 note Studiologic - probably one of the best if not the best) but all the money you spend here goes on buying a keyboard and that`s it, it doesn`t do anything else. Then if you are going to buy hardware use the rack mount versions - often cheaper and smaller - the logic being you do not need another keyboard as you use the mother keyboard all the time. This also means you get used to the feel of the keyboard. Studiologic touch and feel and behave like a piano and not how a synth keyboard usually does.

If you do buy hardware buy something that has that unique edge - an old classic analogue keyboard or a Nord Lead or a 303. Some hands on technology offers a change and more freedom away from your mouse and PC that can get annoying at times.

I am still not convinced that doing the final mixdown within a PC can beat using a decent quality mixing desk. Maybe I am simply not good enough. I still have the tried and trusted Yamaha 02R mixing desk - and now very cheap compared to when I got it.

If you intend to use an outboard mixer you then need to ensure that the soundcard you buy for your PC interfaces with with your mixing desk. Even with professional help we have screwed up twice when upgrading here so take extra care.

So, depending on budget you would buy the PC, sequencing software (often with some half decent soft synths and effects), and a mother keyboard to start with.

Expand buy buying more decent softsynths and then try adding keyboards. Most old keyboards have reviews posted on the net. Then invest in a decent digital mixing desk if you can remembering the soundcard issue.

Then you have a decent mix of PC based and hands on equipment. One thing to note I find using a PC constantly for writing or mixing very tedious after quite a short length of time. There is nothing that feels as good as physically messing around with knobs and sliders, lol.

My little studio is by far best the best boys toy I have ever owned.
