connecting 2 pcs to internet

okay folks am a bit of a novice at this and cant get my head around it

basically im always hogging the internet meaning nobody else can get online

we have 2 pcs, both pcs are 10 meters away from the main phone socket (one downstairs and the other upstairs) both have a 10meters phone extention cable fitted around the skirting board at the moment with a bt voyager modem for each pc, which works great but only one pc can go online at a time. or can they?

ive been looking at a BT voyager 205 router which has sockets for 2 pcs but cant figure out how i would lead it up

would the router be next to one of the pcs meaning a 20 meter extention cable to the other pc

or would it be next to the main phone socket with a 10 meter cable to each pc

can somebody shed some light on it please as its making my head hurt

i found this webpage on the net with diagrams but it shows set ups with ethernet cards and hub etc which would mount up the price if having to buy all that.

BTW: everybody ive asked so far has said go wireless, but ive heard that many storys about wireless i dont fancy it at all

I'm no network geek or owt but I've had my fair share of broadband problems over the last 2 years so hopefully I might be able to help... If you have 2 computers then one pc will act as the host and one as the client. The first plugged directly into the router with an ethernet cable, the second pc should either have a wireless network adapter (if the cable isnt long enough) or will also attach to the router via an ethernet cable and share the internet connection (which will have to be specified when you set the network up in the windows software settings). You will need a modem/router with 2 or more ports (for your 2 computers). Its up to you, you can have the host computer wired to the router and the other pc wireless or you can have them all wireless (as long as you have a wireless adapter attached to each one). Also if your house is anything like mine (if you decide to go wireless) the positioning of your base unit to which the wireless adapter is connected is very important. If I have my computer on the floor it cant get an internet signal, if its on the desk it gets a good signal.

Anyway, I'm gonna stop there cos I'm confusing myself now. Basically sounds like you need a new modem/router with more than one ethernet port and a fuck load of long ethernet wires or a couple of wireless adapters or some proper advice from a trained internet geek..haaha. Good luck mate, I have less hair than I used to because of this broadband nonesense, hopefully you'll find it easier to sort than I did :S

ebay is awash with ethernet cables so wont be a problem there,

eBay.co.uk - ethernet, ethernet adapter, ethernet card, ethernet switch items at low prices

i guess i should probarby get the router/modem first thou so i know what sockets i need on each end of the cable

can anybody else shed any light on the subject please !!?
