How to stop a record from jumpin due to a scratch

Any tips peeps?

Ive recently discovered my copy of never give you up on rhythm of life recordings jumps due to a scratch in it:|

Dont mind it making a click sound over the scratch but it jumpin tears my heart out!:mad:

Don't fancy shelling out for a new un, just seen one on oggs for 75 notes:eek:

Magnifying Glass, Needle. . . steady hand!!
or
Run your nail along the groove with the scratch to try and smooth it out.

Good luck. I have just fixed a record like this recently.

Check it's not a little piece of stuck on dirt. . .you will have done that already.

Depending how severe the scratch is, sometimes you can weight the tonearm down heavier than usual and that will cure it.

Also as Radish said - check that there's nothing on the record you could get off with fingernails etc.

I use to do that until it broke me new needle like in 2 secs never did it again,another way is to put presure on the arm yourself and guide the needle through the scratch so it cuts threw the scratch do this a few times so the scratch becomes unsharp but if the scratch is realy bad then this won't wotk!

As we are talking about scratches,do you remeber that post about that machine that straightens bent vinyl,you put it in it heats it up take like 3 hours or so does anyone have a link to it or does anyone remeber what it was called?

Hi Ste,

I had a copy of thirst - enemy within and that jumped.someone told me to gently rub it with imperial leather soap as it acts as a light abrasive,it bloody worked as well,i recommend you try it first tho on shit record and see what results you get

Iv been doin this for years and have repaired about 20 tunes. It doesnt work all the time as it depends on how deep the scratch is really.

What I do is listen to how it jumps - normally they skip part of the track.

Then play it backwards, sometimes putting a little pressure on the needle in the direction it needs to go.

You have to be really gentle when adding pressure as you could end up doin more damage - but Im built like a fairy and have a gentle touch lol ;)

Ill repeat it a good few times and often it repairs.

Its just like keeping a train on the right line :thumbsup:
