Anyone else on Sky BB ?

I'm hardwired to the modem & every now & then it has a connectivity 'stutter' & goes into sleep mode before waking up... plays merry hell with torent d/ls & also really shit for working at home... it's very unreliable...

Before I put myself through the pain of Sky BB helpdesk (in Taiwan !!!) does anyone else have this issue ?

Seriously though, if you've been given a sagem (grey colour) - hoy it and buy a decent one. They used to supply netgear ones (white) but were only G rated 54mps so go for N-rated router or a G+ MIMO (Belkin or Netgear) they're an absoulte dodle to set up.

worth checking out the phone wiring in your gaff n'all. That's the first foboff the helpdesk'll give ya.
If it's possible to move your kit about, plug yer router direct into the master phone socket & disconnect everything else. Problem goes away then it's likely the phone wiring in yer flat, in which case it's easy sorted.
Problem still occurs you have a pretty much solid case to go to BT or Sky.

Well, any of the DG834 range to be honest, depending on which features you need...


DG834 - ADSL/Router/Switch/Firewall
DG834G - ADSL/Router/Switch/Firewall + 54Mbps Wireless
DG834GT - ADSL/Router/Switch/Firewall + 108Mbps Wireless

Then they get a bit silly about wireless bandwidth...
Fair fucks, but not really much use unless you've got multiple machines in your gaff playing games against each other. The speed of the web access is just the same.

This one DG834PN is pretty much the daddy at the minute.
Again the only difference to the 834GT is (supposedly) 10 x wireless speed. Which is great, but won't matter unless you've got more than one device talking to each other wirelessly. They also claim 10 x the wireless range, but not sure how valid this claim is.

For most purposes, and depending on how much cheaper it is, the GT is probably all you'll need :thumbsup:

For comparison... I saw one of the PN ones go brand new off t'bay recently for 40 quid, which is pretty damn cheap.

Ive had one of them for a couple of years now, whatever you do be careful upgrading the firmware, some of the releases are well buggy:) One thing Ive noticed is when you are running at 108mbps the router tends to overheat from time to time and you lose connectivity, cured by a reboot. If its set to 54 it goes on forever

Due for an upgrade soon methinks:)

One more question will it work with cable broadband,not very clued up on these things.

Make sure you get the correct presentation, RJ45 (ethernet - usually presented in RJ45), not RJ11 (ADSL):thumbsup:

Youll get an RJ45 wireless router really cheap, id look for a better model than the GT, youll get a comparable one to ADSL for the same price if not cheaper:)

No. Cable tends to be presented via Co-Ax (a screw-in connection not unlike telly aerial cable) whereas ADSL is presented via your phone line. That's the "modem" part of the device.

The rest (router/switch/wireless etc.) is the same regardless.
The netgear range (and most of the others) pretty much chuck all these devices in one box to keep it neat and simple.
If you're not sure, I would have a read on the tech suppotr forums of your ISP. There are bound to be people who've switched modems and will recommend kit for you :thumbsup:

As for the 54/108 connection issues, I was under the impression that this was fixed by flashing firmware. Either in the Netgear wireless hub itself, or the device which is communicating with it.
108Mbps is basically 2 x 54Mbps channels bonded together.
There were problems with early 108Mbps devices because of inefficiencies across both (54M) channels in parallel, but I thought these had been resolved some time ago.

Certainly it's bang up to date in terms of the technologies it supports.
Works with both Cable & DSL too...

Only slight neg I can see is that it only has one ethernet port.
That's what you'll use to configure it initially, and can be used to connect a device up to the internet via a cable.

Sometimes it's handy to be able to connect more than one device to it via cables, for instance I connect my printer up that way, and I have a couple of desktop PCs which are quite old and don't have wireless...

It's not a big problem really tho if everything you will use with it supports wireless.

Only other thing I'd suggest is try & find it on amazon & have a read of the reviews :thumbsup:
