BBC NEWS | UK | Clampdown on excessive speeders

I fail to see how driving 20 mph+ above the speed limit is deemed as anti-social driving... surely it depends on a number of variables... weather, visibility, volume of traffic... etc

To me anti-social driving are those dicks who sit in the middle / outside lane of motorways for no good reason when there is a perfectly empty lane beside them & then force me to undertake them. Or twats constantly dabbing their brakes just coz someone else does in front of them when simply lifting off the throttle will do the job just as well. They should be shot in the face.

I had to sit the Advanced Driving Test driving test (was a pre-req for getting 25% discount on my insurance for the V6) with a serving policeman sat beside me as my examiner... part of the exam was on a motorway... 70 mph on a motorway is the slowest place in the world... Oh I realised after I had a bag of sniff in the glove compartment

I agree urban driving should be more carefully monitored & stiffer penalties introduced but surely the whole point of motorways is a dedicated road user only fast route ?

Thoughts ?

Totally agree. Bullshit and hypocrisy of the top order.

"Notwithstanding that these are the best figures we've ever had, we know that we can do more and that we can reduce the numbers of people being killed and seriously injured and that means looking at speeding, drink driving, drug driving, careless driving and people not wearing seatbelts."

I can see they plan to look at speeding & drink/drug-driving in those plans, but what about the others??

You can't seriously tell me that the doddery awld gannies who can't fucking see past the dashboard, and potter around near where I live in their Metros (vanden plas tho mind... picnic tables in the back seats) or Rover 200s are less of a hazard and a danger to life than someone doing 90 up the motorway.

Or clawhammer wielding Czechoslovakian lorry drivers wired to fuck on Pro-Plus & Red Bull (and god knows what else) who've been on the go for 36 hours and are wandering between lanes all ower the gaff...

It's absolute bollocks.

If you want to promote road safety...

1) Spend money on road improvements, not just more signs and cameras... better lighting... markings... widening... clearing verges...

2) Compulsory driving test every 5 years once you get to 50, and every 2 years from 65 onwards

3) Ban scooters & 125cc bikes altogether. 250 cc minimum. Also ban L plate bikers & CBT & force everyone who wants to ride a bike to do a full test.

4) Minimum speed limits on motorways (except in the left hand lane).

5) More police patrols.

6) Compulsory road safety education in schools for kids.

They won't of course bring in any of the above measures, because they'd cost too much and/or be too unpopular with voters. Much easier to just do what they always do... more speed = more danger & lower the drink driving limit... Not saying I'm against either of those things, just that they are completely missing the point IMO...

But it'll win them votes (from the above Metro-driving old grannies & the Daily Mail brigade) and it'll cost them next to nowt to introduce, and it'll pay for itself in extra speeding tickets & higher fines.

What annoys me most is they think we are so stupid we don't see it.

Just got me a speeding ticket with a fixed camera of all things:eek:

Fortunately it's a fixed penalty and 3 points, but it's not like me to miss one:|

Agree that variables should be taken into consideration to determine safe driving though:thumbsup:

Movin' on up.
I think that the speed limit on motorways should be reviewed and increased to 85.

However, I cannot be doing with people who break a known law and then whinge about the consequences. If you don't want a ticket, don't break the law?

It's like people who knowingly leave their car on double yellows and then go mental with the warden who gives them a ticket. I mean. . .. you knew a ticket was a possibility!!:|

I got done in North Wales doing 90 in a 70 zone by a handheld camera and was pulled by a patrol car. I just accepted the ticket on the spot, paid the fine and accepted I had been caught out.

Personal responsibility for my actions.

It is not always someone elses fault.

I've come to accept that its an inevitability that speeders will be forced to slow down. I've gone from having a daily habit of needing to break 140 bannans per hour to give me a buzz. To something below 100 so as not to scare Sarah in to silence for an hour or more. And to keep my licence.

There is no point in me arguing that speed does not kill anyone, carelessness does. Because whilst that point rings true with those that speed over 100. THe majority of people do not speed, and find it alien to speed; so even though you are not committing a real crime; it is disturbing enough to the consensus of adults to allow these draconian laws to keep being passed. And its the same in all the Western nations.

I honestly have more hope of seeing drugs properly legalised and eradicating the consequential associated crime. Than I do of seeing a debate as to why 70 mph is relevant 43 years after it was introduced. Drum brakes to disc brakes, improved street and car lighting, better driving tests... why do we bother?

Kev - agree on all points

My friends & colleagues can't get their heads around that 100 to me is just cruising... let alone pressing on above that. They think I have a deathwish.

I would argue that when I drive at those speeds I am probably the most concentrated & aware driver around me on that road.... you have to be at those speeds.... I watch everything, everywhere.

It's not big & it's not clever but it IS immensely enjoyable.

Not that I'm playing devil's advocate or disagree, but I have three separate friends in the graveyard who thought along those lines.

Two were killed by their speeding and one was killed by someone elses.

Dave Meltcalf, probably the best front wheel drive rally driver of all time was powerless to save himself when some one pulled out in front of him on the public highway, this was a man who had the best car control I have ever seen.

Fair post & sobering... I'm suitably admonished & chided :$

i must say that i do tend to speed but not excessively, i just go with the flow of the traffic but im cautious about cameras when im in an area i dont know.
iv not had a speeding ticket but id be so gutted if i got one, regardless if it was mt fault or not.
i NEVER drink and drive or take drugs (dont take them anyway) then drive though, that is a big no no for me....
