I studied the spread of AIDS in Africa as part of my degree and while conditions have changed since then many of the factors still hold true.

The main route of AIDS distribution was along the long distance trucking routes as drivers would stop off and visit prostitutes on their journey. AIDS soon spread in a largely linear fashion along transport routes. Once distributed along these routes it soon spread elsewhere as infected drivers slept with their wife of partners.

Certainly the Papal effect on the use of contraception is unhelpful in preventing the spread of the disease, but not everyone in Africa is a fee paying member of the Roman Church and contraception was not really used in Africa anyway.

There are cultural/macho issues that often mean contraception is not used. There is ignorance and mystic/tribal beliefs that also make people think they cannot catch it. There is a culture of multiple wives in certain parts of Africa.

If Catholics stuck to the core massage from the Pope (as Jiglo pointed out), they would only ever sleep with one partner in their life. How many Catholics in Africa or elsewhere have stuck to this teaching 100%? Not many is my guess. I suspect many who defend the Pope and the Catholic Church around the world also break the rules. . .such is life. . . .Jesus was "perfect". . we are not.

The facts are AIDS affects all societies, but Africa is blighted for many reasons . . cultural, religious, education & economic factors are all important.

It cannot be oversimplified, it is deeply complicated and very sad.

u have just completely contradicted yourself in this post - yes catholics do not believe in sex before marriage but what the pope means is marriage is for life so he doesnt mean having multiple partners :|

Lisa, I wasn't saying I hate catholics. I watched the news and they were saying how the pope refused to condone the use of condoms, and alot of africa is catholic. its hardly a racist comment is it? ive a shit load of mates who are catholic, its not even the issue. IM NOT SAYING ITS CATHOLICS FAULT. I know its alot more complicated-and i know religion is a grey area of what u can or cant say (like the whole isreali pallestinean jew thing). i honestly do not think ive said anything wrong.

having said that-maybe my comment was a little plippant-based on what mr raddish has said. (good post by the way). i honestly heard that on the news...and that was the angle they took-so maybe i should not believe what i see on the news as gospel. I know the pope cant condone sex outside of marriage/condoms, thats his job. i just thought if it could help the aids epidemic, why would he not want to make an exception-but i klnow this would never happen, and couldn't...for the sake of catholisism.

That is quite honestly the saddest thing I've ever read in my life.


People can believe in religious fairytales all they want. I personally think it's stupid, but each to their own and all that. But lying about science, especially to people in the third world who have no way of checking facts for themselves is absolutely disgusting. I didn't think it could get worse than the Intelligent Design movement in America, with them trying to get creationism taught in schools as a valid scientific theory, but fuck me, it's stooped to an all time low with that one.

lozzie ive been to africa a few times and yeah radish ur post was excellent there is a lot of prostitutes out there and has lots of passing trade what im saying is that - its not due to africa being mostly catholic its due to africans not using any method of contraception - lol if all catholics were not using condoms not only would aids be more rife than it is but there would also be a lot of nippers running about ;) my granny had 10 kids :eek: but these days any catholic i know practises safe sex as well as making sure they dont get pregnant - i know uve mates in ireland as ive met u a few times i just dont think it was justified to say it was just catholics
i dont agree with some of the catholic churches preachings its like maybe any religion people belong to u dont have to believe in it all just have your own faith
anyway enough of that u can give me a condom next time u see me ;) :thumbsup: :love:

That's sort of what I was gettin at before. Like the bloke is the mac daddy and can sort of do what he wants etc and all sorts of mad beliefs... You explained it better though. :)

Seriously. You wouldn't be able to tell anyone. Obviously I wouldn't go shouting it about but I'd have to tell my family and anyone who I though could be infected. I suppose the way of getting round having to tell everyone you've slept with is to get a test before sleeping with a new person and checking you're all clear. So obviously you would then know who had given it to you and there would be no need to tell everyone you've ever slept with.

There's a lot of people who sleep with a lot of other people with no protection and sleep with looooooooooooads of people and think it's ok.... It's trashy and obviously people don't think of the repercussions, one of which is HIV/aids.... :S
