I've just got my first proper bike - a specialised rockhopper sl 2010, been tryna get into it for a while so finally took the plunge!

I've been down to Cannock this weekend so went for a blast round cannock chase, found it quite hard going sometimes but its been a few years since i've been biking so was quite pleased with how it went really,

think i'm gonna go up to gisburn on tuesday and see what its like round there, has anyone got any other good trails? whats llandegla like? heard good things about that.

any other hints/tips?

Nice one Ponka, we'll have to start having meet ups mate;)

Llandegla is a more established mountain bike area and the routes are easier than Gisburn for the grading of trails, that said there's some challenging trails there. There's a bike hire place there, a shop and a cafe restaurant so it's a good place to chill after a big ride. You pay for parking there though and the car park is many times bigger and pretty full at weekends in high season.

Gisburn feels half finished, like a work in progress. Some of the trails lead to dead ends, can be challenging, are badly signposted, have gaps between trees that are so narrow you have maybe an inch or 2 spare for riding through then - hence why there's been a serious amount of bikers hit them with their handlebars. The parking is free though and the carpark was pretty empty when we rode there. You can't stop for a brew or a snack after a ride though, so take your own refreshments;)

Nice one Ponka!

Looking to hit Cannock soon if I can get some of the locals together, a bit of a trek from here on me own, but should be able to sort something.

Not been out for a week, still ill. :(

Got back in the saddle on Sunday for the 1st time in a couple of weeks due to illness.

Had 4hrs out there battling with the elements, bumped into a local MTB club doing a similar route, so got chatting and tagged on the rear, made a nice change to ride in a big group and seamed easier to ride.

Back out tonight if the weather permitts.

Did 40 minutes last night, and its gonna take me longer to clean the bike, proper shitty muddy trails out there after all this rain. Averaged 7.3 mph on the full suspension, which is pretty good going seeing as i've only used the hardtail on semislicks for the last month.
No pics atm but i got a GPS track of the route...

Managed an hour each last 2 weekends, did just over 6 miles on each weekend, as you say, trails are muddy as hell, hard pedalling, getting no where fast, I was on full susser, mate was on hard tail, going again this weekend, hoping to hit over 10 mile, depending if mate can hack it, (his 2nd time on a bike in 20 years).

Like you, bike was caked in mud, took me ages to clean it both weekends

Completely different ball game pedaling through thick mud, Shoomington, the losses due to knobbly tyres and the inevitable wheelspin conspire to knack the fook out of you....
On a level track, say a canal towpath, the average on an MTB on knobblies is between 15 to 18mph... Full bouncers take energy from your pedalstroke in the form of pedal bob, hardtail front suss reduce this somewhat.
Hence why roadies/ commuters/ hybrids are fully rigid.

Well, everyone let me down last night due to the weather being shite, so I thought I would still go out.

Got me road bike out though, managed about 20miles before the rain got the better of me.

Going for it this winter, just like me chemical days, flat out or fcuk all. :p

I agree with the hard pedaling in the mud, my MTB is a hard tail, still a bugger to pedal in the mud and awful to clean when you get back. Lucky I borrwed me old mans jet wash the other week to do the patio.

Can't wait till the weekend, back out on the MTB, perhaps hit the Cromford Canal & Sheep Pasture incline route again, part of the route is a 1 in 8.5 for 3/4 mile but fantastic views when you hit the top!

Pissing it down with 80mph winds, thats what the forecast said last night.

So I got in the saddle and rattled out 3hrs early doors before it came. Lovely sunshine first thing this morning.
