Its a sad indication of the British (western/international?) 'PREMIUM' music industry has come to X-Factor, whatever your opinion. As said before, the success of this music isnt based on its quality it seems it is a purely a question of strength of marketing - call me cynical. Its been this way since the mid 90s. Were independent dance music labels the last bastion of a free music industry or am i missing something?

Very good point. Back in the eighties independent labels were actually independent wheres today "indie" music is just guitar based product marketed by major labels.

It's a pity there's not another "acid house" phenomenon on the horizon to blow this crap out of the water. :(

Funny as, but I bet record sales are also up for the x factor 1

I was think about this before, he must have gained a lot more votes as sympathy votes from people who heard about the rage campaign who probably wouldn't have bought it under normal circumstances. I'd be interested to see the sales figures for this and the four previous X-Factor winners and see how much Joe got whooped by.

I kind of feel a bit sorry for him, but at the end of the day, all he did was win a singing competition, and it's wrong of X-Factor to just assume that it's going to top the charts for Christmas. Cowell even said when he won, "this will sell a million copies." I bet it was a long way off that, lol it's not even a good song.

I'm sure he'll have an album out soon and make a few quid, and if he's any good he'll have lots more albums and make millions.

This whole affair pretty much sums up what a sorry state we live in right now.
All contrived, and even though X Factor got beat, I'll bet Cowell's off to order his next Audi R8 on the back of all this publicity. :(

Does it really matter?

When the most of us were in our youth; immersed in one of the biggest happenings of all time. The entertainment industry that served the masses plodded on regardless, Stock Aitken & Waterman and soft Rock ruled the airhead/middle of the road pop charts. And as much as we disliked it, the majority loved it.
So the entertainment industry; just like the tabloids, is still here, and will continue to be for decades.

Trying to get rid of the crap music industry, seems akin to telling people that eating at chippys and fast food outlets is bad for your health...

I think it's cruel on this lad. Everyone's been like "his single is shit, don't buy it" and slating him. The poor boy is 17 and this will have been a mega thing for him, winning a competition, doing something he loves, beating loads of applicants. It's quite a good achievement really for someone. Entering anything and coming first deserves a chufty badge! :)

I just feel sorry for the poor guy, that's all. He's just been caught in the crossfire!! Lol.

You know, I was just thinking about this the other day. Back then, the Stock Aitken & Waterman bandwagon was in full steam until house music rode into town and stole the show. There was just as much bad music around then as there is now. I think the difference is that now there's no unified cause for people to support as a reaction to the mainstream and ultimately there's not enough people bothered to make a difference.... someone start the next revolution, quick.

...and as for the X-Factor, no more than glorified "Opportunity Knocks" for the 21st century. We've been here before you know. :cops:

...And while I'm at it, here's a top 40 singles chart from October 1988. The same month Mike Pickering was playing out some ace music at Nude at The Hacienda (see Music section for a taster)
Apart from from a couple of obvious exceptions, doesn't make for inspiring listening does it?

1 Black Box - Ride On Time
2 Jive Bunny & The Mastermixers - That's What I Like
3 Technotronic featuring Felly - Pump Up The Jam
4 Sydney Youngblood - If Only I Could
5 Milli Vanilli Girl - I'm Gonna Miss You
6 Rebel MC & Double Trouble - Street Tuff
7 Billy Joel - We Didn't Start The Fire
8 Erasure - Drama!
9 Wet Wet Wet - Sweet Surrender
10 Belinda Carlisle - Leave A Light On
11 The Beautiful South - You Keep It All In
12 Cher - If I Could Turn Back Time
13 Living In A Box - Room In Your Heart
14 Richard Marx - Right Here Waiting
15 Fresh 4 featuring Lizz E - Wishing On A Star
16 Tina Turner - The Best
17 Curiosity Killed The Cat - Name And Number
18 Bros - Chocolate Box
19 Chris Rea - The Road To Hell (Part 2)
20 Sonia - Can't Forget You

Well said

I think the only "winners" are the record labels here.

All the fools who have bought the mp3s or cd's etc have been had over by the media - it's probably the record company behind all the facebook groups as well

not really. people just wanna let everyone know-that they have the choice to do what they want-irrespective of the money. don't slag it off-i think it's fantastic, and very funny (just coz it came unexpectedly) I brought the mp3, and do not feel at all had over-its like voting really...even if it doesn't make a difference-uve got to be heard! xxx
