Expedit storage question

Well my Easter bank holiday is sorted...

I'll be re-painting my lounge :|

I'll also be taking the opportunity to sort out all my tunes back into sleeves & some semblence of order :$ Plus treated meself to 300 quid's worth of Expedit shelving as my cubes have seen better days plus the Expedit cubes are shallower than the deep fuckers I've got at the mo meaning I can reclaim some space back in me lounge

Here's my mess at the mo...most of it's cleared away :$

^^^ re this one... as this is gonna take the bulk of my tunes is screwing to the wall a neccesity ? How sturdy are they ? How easy are they to build ?:$

Good choice, got a variety of these in my living room too:$

Piece off piss to bulid, so easy you can do the bloke thing and not even look at the instructions

I've got a 4x4 dividing the room(right angles to the wall)and it does lean a little so i'd recommend securing that one to the wall

I have these too, i would consider myself to be a disaster as far as DIY goes but even i could build these so you'll have no probs Shooms mate

They are pretty sturdy but I screwed mine to the wall for that extra bit of security...i take no chances where my vinyl is concerned lol

Unless they've changed them, they are well sturdy Mark, and weigh a fucking tonne!
Provided your floor is level you should be fine without fixing them to the wall.

You might want to check how sturdy your floors are though.

Yes, a number of posters from djhistory board said they had problems with ceilings caving in and walls cracking etc due to the weight of several of these full of vinyl.

Mine luckily at the moment are in the cellar on a concrete floor so no worries, but for bedrooms or anything above ground floor level you might need to re-enforce the floors or secure to the walls - I'd get someone in to check it out mate if I were you.


Also 2 of the 4 x 4 units would give you more storage then the 3 options you proposed above and be cheaper at just £80 each £160 total spend

Yes, a number of posters from djhistory board said they had problems with ceilings caving in and walls cracking etc due to the weight of several of these full of vinyl.

Mine luckily at the moment are in the cellar on a concrete floor so no worries, but for bedrooms or anything above ground floor level you might need to re-enforce the floors or secure to the walls - I'd get someone in to check it out mate if I were you.


Also 2 of the 4 x 4 units would give you more storage then the 3 options you proposed above and be cheaper at just £80 each £160 total spend

I live in a 1st floor flat above an internet cafe but it's been professionally converted so guessing the floor is OK... the main shelving cube I've got up is holding summat like 1300 - 1500 tunes already (think it's lying across the joists too)...

Good heads up on the djhistory forum - cheers - been having a mooch on there... mad to think that a 5x5 holds 2500 tunes which is HALF A BASTARD TON !!!

I know I'm paying more for less storage but the set up I'm ordering fits into me lounge & around the fire place etc... you'll get the gist when I bang up pics afterwards

The alternative is to "stiffen" the structure by fixing a hardboard backpanel to the unit (local woodyard will cut to size) so you don't have to fix to the wall, but maybe that's getting a bit deep into DIY territory! :$

Shoomsy, I got a 4x4 unit int the dining room and the father in law had to lop half a cubes worth off the right hand side to fit it snuggly in a recess, looks fine though and sturdy.

I would seriously have a look at your floor first and get someone round to check your joists. We just had some replaced (our suspended bouncing front room floor). The work was very messy and quite costly :$
