Hi there, I'm doing a brief at uni. And want a little bit of qualitative research doing.

if you could answer some quezzies for me, I'd really appreciate it.

1. What are the reasons you DJ?

2. When you play to an audience, as a DJ what is your most important role? (think in terms of entertainment/story telling/musicality etc etc) whatever lol.

3. As a DJ, what is it you think a crowd deserves from experiencing your set?

Basically, the point of my brief (I'm a creative advertising student), is to brand a new product, and sell it using new media/techniques only. So i got to pick my product (we do this so that everyone is varied, which is good to stand out etc).

Anyway, i picked this...töken experience on Vimeo.

If you want to give any sort of comment (as DJs, I don't mind if you'd not use it, but maybe try to keep it non-bitchy, although reasons for not using it would be appreciated) I'd really like it.

1. What are the reasons you DJ?

Not sure why really. Have always collected music and had an urge to share it. To be honest I never set out to be a dj so to speak and still don't regard myself as one to this day. I always said the day I dj'ed aqnd money was the motivatio for me doing it then I would stop. Thankfully I still do it as I enjoy it

2. When you play to an audience, as a DJ what is your most important role? (think in terms of entertainment/story telling/musicality etc etc) whatever lol.

My role as a so called dj is just to provide the soundtrack so that peeps enjoy themselves and have a good time

3. As a DJ, what is it you think a crowd deserves from experiencing your set?

They deserve me giving it my best effort and not getting smashed out of my face when I play. It's a shame the crowd does not always get what they deserve. I do try my best, just a pity sometimes I'm smashed :)

hi loz, i'll try to answer as best i can :)

1. What are the reasons you DJ?

i can't remember exactly how i got started, probs some half baked idea about being the new sasha and sleeping with lots of fit birds, the same as most other ppl if they're being honest lol ;) at the same time i did love the tunes and fell in love with it straight away.

these days i do it because i still enjoy it and to entertain myself and my friends, if other ppl like it too then even better :D

2. When you play to an audience, as a DJ what is your most important role? (think in terms of entertainment/story telling/musicality etc etc) whatever lol.

the most important thing is to try to entertain, there's no point telling a story if everyone thinks it's shite lol. having said that u have to rely on ur musical taste to a certain extent.

i once got asked how i decided which tunes to buy, and i said that i buy what i like and play that. the person i was talking to slated me, saying that i was being selfish cos i was playing for myself rather than for the crowd :S

i couldn't disagree more tbh, if ur in a record shop listening to tunes and u hear somat u think is crap but u think it might appeal to the masses, and u buy it for that reason ur doomed, that's how the most atrocious music gets made imho. having said that, as easty says what ur aiming for is for ppl to enjoy themselves, there are few better buzzes than to see ppl going mental while u play.

u have to play for urself first, and if ppl like it then great :D if they don't it's time to find a new hobby lol

3. As a DJ, what is it you think a crowd deserves from experiencing your set?

it depends how much they're paying lol. it's no secret that i'm battered half the time when i play on here. i don't feel guilty cos it's all free and ppl can either turn off or take over from me if they want to. if it's a club and ppl have paid good money then they have a right to expect more.

on the other hand i like to think that when i do play i try to play stuff that ppl will like, for instance if ppl are on the shoutbox and i know they like a bit of oldskool piano then i will try to fit some in even tho it's not my fave style.

as for the link at the bottom, i have seen a video of someone demo-ing it before and i have to admit it's very impressive, although personally i only play vinyl, heavy and expensive though it may be it's my first love and i think it always will be. i've tried mp3 mixing and for some reason it doesn't float my boat, it probs is the future and possible to build a huge collection of tunes with minimal effort but it's just not for me :)

hope that helps m8 good luck with the assignment :D

1. Because I love music, and always wanted to be able to tinker with it.

2. To provide a backdrop for what ever else folk are doing in their lives at the time (My radio show is on a Sunday afternoon) & that now & then someone might discover a tune they haven't heard before & LOVE it.

3. They deserve to get chilled the f00k out!

As to the video...... I asked for one of those for Crimbo & none of yas tight gits would buy it for me.

1. What are the reasons you DJ?

It was a natural progression from being totally in love with music, although I had been collecting tunes way before DJ'ing it was the rave scene in 1989-1990 that made me realise I could enjoy the music even more by mixing tunes together and creating more atmosphere. It was a very personal thing to begin with.

2. When you play to an audience, as a DJ what is your most important role? (think in terms of entertainment/story telling/musicality etc etc) whatever lol.

Most important role playing to audience, is entertaining the crowd and making them smile and buzz, wonder whats on next and for them to hear some of their fave tunes, and maybe some will go home and say, did you hear that tune, that was played tonight, not heard it before but it was good as fook!

3. As a DJ, what is it you think a crowd deserves from experiencing your set?

They deserve the best music out there thats what the DJ is put there for. They deserve effort from the DJ in terms of spending a bit of time before the event, thinking about what the crowd will buzz off at the event. Get a few cheeky mixes together that sound awesome. Give em a treat:thumbsup:

The DJ should put as much effort into the set as they can, so thats tune selection and mixing and trying to engage with the audience, build things up, get em goin! Break it down, give em a rest, wonder whats on next, then BOOM back up again:D Fook em up in a good way lolphones: Its all about about people having a great time init:thumbsup:

1. To share a passion for music. Music really makes me happy, I'd hope I could do that for someone else.

2. The most important thing for me is uplift people, to have them forget the worries they have at home and work and just lose themselves for a few hours. There's a freedom that comes with that, which I think is important in anyones life.

3. Similar to above really, they deserve a good time, a smile.

1) I am fanatical about music, always have been and no doubt always will be. I have always been interested in discovering new artists, tunes, producers and have always wanted to extend my appreciation for what I consider to be good music to others - to be influential. Somehow the thought of people listening to what I consider to be shit music when there is a wealth of good music to be heard used to annoy the shit out of me. This annoyance has diminished with age but I still get a kick out of introducing others to good tunage. Used to be with friends but being a DJ helped me to influence more people so being a DJ was one of my main ambitions from a very early age.

2) I am there to entertain with my choice of tunes, the order that I play them in and, hopefully, show a bit of creativity with the manner they are all mixed or linked together in my set

3) Entertainment from the effort I put in to my performance both before and during my sets.

In return, all I ask for is for a little appreciation and for the fuckers to dance. :)
