occasional table?

What's the purpose of an occasional table, is it something you use for special occasions or just a piece of furniture you use now and then? Always baffled me that one:S

Its a table you buy and clutter your house up and never use the bloody thing....or is that just ours?

Exactly this, have used mine for sitting and eating dinner about twice in 2 years. The most pointless piece of furniture in my house, just looks a total mess.
