Another cheery thread from me- Once a store i used to enter weekly on my Viynl run in Manchester along with Spin inn ; exchange and Eastern Bloc

Looking very close to the edge- swallowed up pretty much all the music high street and now itself looking to go ??

The music industry has changed so much its scary !

However not to mention HMV has always been to expensive IMO

I used to spend a small fortune each week on vinyl in the 90`s and early naughties at hmv, as well as smaller shops in leeds, the listening booth, jumbo and crash and used to pop over to the spin inn from time to time, its a shame that the digital age has taken such a grip on the music industry in a sense.
Who knows what the music industry will be like in say 10 years time, everything available online and not in the high street at all I reckon.

I think there will always be second hand record shops, so I think the joy of crate digging will stay with us....as for independents selling new stuff.....I don't think the future is quite as bright.

remember its record store day next saturday, so go and buy something and help the cause

It's been in trouble for ages:|

I buy the odd thing from there every now and again, but not records, because there aren't any to buy. When they did the 3 records for £10 thing with (mainly) Urban and S12 it was actually pretty cheap shopping for those records there, but some of the other stuff wasn't competitively priced.

Vive the (digital) revolution for some, but for me it's sad being a vinyl junky reminiscing about the days when their shelves where stocked with new stuff every week:(

In all fairness that Leeds branch had a cracking vinyl section. Remember buying loads in there, as did the one in Derby, the Sheffield one though was mediocre at best.

I used to go to Birmingham HMV at least once a week, then on to Tempest/Pure/Global Grooves/HTFR depending on which period in time we're talking. They used to have a pretty decent selection in HMV, Jason Ellis worked behind the counter and went on to A&R for EMI Positiva I believe. It was worth going there first as if the new stuff had escaped you on promo you could get them for 1.99 when newly released

Tempest was always better though, and Carl behind the counter made me spend a fortune cos he knew exactly what I wanted to hear. It was especially dangerous to go in there still spangled from the weekend, the 'magic headphones' always made stuff sound great until you got it home lol.

It's kinda sad that they are going, but I have hardly been in for years and they don't really sell anything I want (that I can't get cheaper elsewhere). Sign of the times...

I can definately agree with that one mate, some of my vinyl looks brand new despite it been years old, taken out of the sleeve once, never again!

IN A HOUSE
Hmv

This is the place I wanted to work when I was younger I used to go into here and bought quiet alot of vinyl but then ventured around the corner to 3beat and groover records and started to pay quiet a few bob for my vinyl but found all the lovely music I really wanted there.

But the hustle and bustle of being in the shop I just loved in the late 80s but as time passed it deffo was to expensive and I fell in love with the way you could go into groover records and three beat and get the piano style of choons played on 1210s in the shop and pumped up really loud so you got that club feel in what could only be called a box room all the vynil in boxed up D.I.Y shelving and tapes and mixes mixed that weekend by your fave dj all in one box.

Sorry to H.M.V but to be honest the music shop has ripped us off for years and even tho vinyl is loosing its value in places to me its like having another chance to own stuff that was worth a packet back in the day bring on more of it I say. I would never sell me vinyl and even tho I have bought and sold me decks over the years I would be very upset if one day I had to say goodbye to my vinyl.

Its heavy it takes up to much room and it takes a lifetime to siff through and clean but I just couldnt ditch it as soon as I put a record on the deck It takes me back to being in me bedroom. 15 years old with what can only be called two wanna be decks and trying to beat match two copies of the same song as speed control was all done by the hand as technics where past my school days budget and my grandad just thought you needed two decks and no mixer lol.

I can't understand how anyone can sell there choons "please if you want to its up to you its just not for me". you know they have mounted these over the years and I find people selling there whole collection for buttons to make room:confused: I have managed to get more in the last 5 years as techno updates mp3 hardrives and all that shizz has took over. Im just glad I had a chance to spend a lifetime in these record shops collecting as downloading is a 5 min thing.

Being able to spot a label and sift through an endless amount of vinyl in a shop of fellow vinyl loons just feels 1 million times better but I bet thats just age hahahaha
...

Kiss me brown eye
By giving Portugal the loan, the state, UK PLC, makes an extortionate amount of profit on the interest rate. Same as bailing out Ireland.
Yeah we are in the financial shit, but we are still credit worthy to the international banking system.
So we take out a loan from the International banks to bail out these countries at a favourable interest rate to us, as we are credit worthy, and we bump up the interest of the loans we give to Portugal. its a win win for us.

My understanding was (and I may be wrong) that we were only offering some theoretical loan guarantees and the chances of us ever having to hand over any cash was remote?

U31 and Mr Radish, you are both correct, we have provided a favourable loan to Ireland due to our special relationship (ie that we export alot of our goods to them and therefore it is in our interest to ensure they remain solvent). The basis of the loan is as described by U31. We are also underwriting loans (not making them directly but there in case Ireland default on the loan). Unfortunately since the new government has taken place in Ireland they are suggesting it may be best for them to default.

In regards to Portugal, they buy very little from us and therefore we do not have a special relationship and therefore we are only to underwrite loans which we would be obliged to meet should Portugal default. There is a posibility of this given that elections have yet to take place with the existing arrangements being made by an interim government.

The joys of being a part of the left wing and amazingly corupt EU and being told how to spend your countrys and most importantly its citizens own money!!

S.....not political and certainly not UKIP fan!

ps How did a thread about HMV end up here??
