I though i'd show you this mix I did today which is some tunes of The best NRG for the 90s volume 6 a mixing CD. I have finally got some :headphones: now. Here is my mix. First of all see if you think it's any better.

You can also view the CD I used on here and volumes 1-5 in the edtions. They even tell you what BPM the tune is at. See what you think about them.

hotdiscomix :: Hot Tracks :: NRG For The 90's :: Best Of... Volume 5
hotdiscomix :: Hot Tracks :: NRG For The 90's :: Best Of... Volume 4
hotdiscomix :: Hot Tracks :: NRG For The 90's :: Best Of... Volume 3
hotdiscomix :: Hot Tracks :: NRG For The 90's :: Best Of... Volume 2
hotdiscomix :: Hot Tracks :: NRG For The 90's :: Best Of... Volume 1

I have now ordered volumes 1 & 2 as well on internet. It cost £16 to do that (£8 each). Volumes 3, 4, & 5 are very hard to get hold of. As for volume 6 I found it at a shop where I live for £4.

Sounds like you've got the hang of it now!
Do you see how using the headphones to cue up the next track is helping you get your timing spot on? Great work and keep practicing

One small idea... When you used the filter near the begining , id personally have another track running in the background and filter this over the top of the playing track, it will add a new dimension to that track.. On its own the filter sounded harsh... But this is just my opinion

Now then.... try this
Get your first track playing, cue up the second one in your headphones and have the filter on the new track set at fully turned, left or right... hit play, very gradually bring the fader across (or lift the volume slider depending on how you mix) and slowly bring the filter back to centre! its a really good effect..
Remember there are no rules, just have fun while experimenting

Much better mate :) phones:

Instead of twisting the FX knobs (which don't add much to the mix in my opinion), use the time to cue & drop the other tune & listen to the mix in the headfones (both channels should have a cue button) so you can listen to the mix in the headfones while the cross fade is just on the open tune being played open.

Keep doing this beyond a 16 beat bar to make sure it's in synch & holds :)

As others have said the main thing is that you're enjoying it

My advice is:

1. Listen to your mixes again and try to understand how the mixes can be improved, eg levels & beat matching and where you decide to mix.

2. Re do your mix and see if you improve.

3. Fook all that BPM crap...they can lie - trust your ear!

4. Concentrate on the above before you fook about with effects.

5. Enjoy phones:

Just when you think that the world is full of bad, along comes a thread like this...
Respect to Johnathon for trying to improve his skills but also to the many people that have posted advice.
That's what life should be all about.

We all joined OSA for the love of music, so its great to see Jonathan starting to click!

Jack G has good advice there mate, record everything an listen back to your mix, become your own worse critic, listen to how you could do it different next time..

On the note of self criticism, all of the best dj's on OSA, Northern Star, Radish, Bod, Barrie, Adam W, Woody, Cano -among many others who we will all agree are fookin fantastic... Every one of them i have personally seen pulling their hair out thinking a mix was no good, when i was sat there watching them thinking it was amazing!
The headphones let you hear what the audience cant, and that self doubt, in my opinion, thinking they could have done better even though the audience hear perfection, is what makes the above list and others on here the best dj's i know
