I'd pop down to Citizens Advice to see what your options are:thumbsup:

I suppose if you knowingly made a false claim or took money offered you that you thought you weren't entitled to, then it serves you right, but if they made the mistake, and you'd spent the cash or can't afford repayment, then they should perhaps forgo their losses.

Either way, mistakes like this cost the taxpayer millions, so it makes you question the logic of getting rid of civil servant staff if it creates inefficiencies.

Sympathies Ste. Youre not the only one though. One of my FB friends posted the same thing yesterday - they must be recalculating or something. Fuck 'em tbh though mate. If they cant sort it properly in the first place they dont deserve to come calling asking for it back. Obviosuly they will though. Maybe you could suggest a repayment plan based on say, £1 a month?

I had this years ago, i just didn't send my renewal form in on time- they got after the cut off, so they said i had to repay the amount from April (when the new claim year starts) to October when they stopped paying me.

I just ignored it and other than one other letter a few weeks after the original i never heard from them again.

I know it is wrong as it seems so unfair this whole tax credit thing, but shit we do well out of it. I couldn't actually work part time for the amount we get :axe:

Aye, the way it works is basically based on the honesty of those claiming. So in April when the new year starts, unless you have told them otherwise they assume your income/circumstances are the same as the previous year. When you then fill in your renewal decleration and send it back (around now) they do an official calculation for the rest of the year (like now to next April). Obv's like if you have recieved a big bonus, done loads of overtime or changed jobs that pays more, then the new amount will be lower.

My mate who was a single parent on income support of twins (arggghh) once had her benefit miscalulated by the DSS (going back to 2000 here). Turned out they had been over paying her £11 a week for years, so they reduced her amount by that £11 and then took another £11 off to repay the debt over a few years. There was fuck all she could do about it, and man when you're own your own with kids every pound counts. Having a 1/4 of her weekly income taken away was just wrong.

Tried calling them today and they told me that letter was provisional and I need to wait for the official one to come. But honestly I was truthful when I gave them the details I took all the details from my P60. I really dont understand how they can screw up and expect people to pay back such a large ammount. Hell life is rough enough with being raped for 18% tax each month, I do as much overtime as i possibly can just to try provide a better life for my family but mr taxman just says thak you very much for your hard work.

What realy pisses me off is that my sister recently lost her job and is now on jobseekers allowance, applied for a furniture grant this morning for her new council house and got awarded £2500 and dont have to pay it back. I asked for help with my mortgage during hard times and was promptly told in a nice way "get tae fuck" as they wont pay on a personal mortgage. Makes ya think whats the point in working half the time. No wonder so many bums on society in this country when it pays not to work.

Ah well life goes on and I start a new job soon about a mile from my house so saves the fuel from a 44 mile journey daily and £1.50 more per hour. Got my family and thats what matter in the end :)

Tell Them To Recoup Their Loses From The Wanker-bankers Stu

Why is it everyone in this country hates to take responsibility for their own actions? We're supposed to live in a free society of choice rather than a communist country, so that's what the banks gave us - a choice. Same as supermarkets.

We chose to borrow money and we did because we are greedy.

We chose to eat and we did, and got fat because we are greedy.

I don't see any difference between Sainsburys and Santander.

If you can't afford it don't buy it - that's my motto. And if you don't do the exercise don't eat it.....else suffer the consequences and don't complain.

What you on about, yeah there are lots of people who were living way beyond their means, i was offered loads of bank loans, credit cards ect, i never took any of them, like many in this country, i live within my budget and if i want something i save until i can afford whatever i want, the banking collapse had nothing at all to do with me but my children will still be paying for the mistakes made, yes those who accepted loans they couldn't afford are guilty but until our government get's a grip of the champagne lifestyle of the wanker bankers and their bonuses then this type of thing will happen again, but no, our governments would rather let the banks off the hook and claw bk money from the citizens of the country, offcourse if you receive an overpayment you need to pay it bk but those in power should show the same resolve with the main offenders, banks, tax avoiders ect as show to the joe blogs,

And i cant remember Sainsburys needing to be BAILED out.....

True (well not yet anyway) but supermarkets have ripped the gut out of home grown produce in this country. Before long nothing will be grown in this country and it will all be shipped in from abroad. All our fields will be turned into motorways just so we can all get to MacDonalds a bit faster.

Sign of the times and the western culture, there are a lot of people who don't give a cr@p about anything other than themselves and expect everything to be delivered to them on a plate for cheap or free.

I'm not having a pop at you, I'm sure you're a decent guy - but the decent people in this country get dragged down into the mire because of the lowlifes who do live that way (deliberately getting bankrupt etc and not giving a hoot) and they will blame anyone other than themselves when they've got themselves up a creek without a paddle (because they didn't get away with whatever scam they were trying to pull off, or just being plain greedy).

It's about time these types of people grew up, took responsibility for their own actions and put their toys back in the pram.
