Like when you have a pile of whites in a record shop to skip thru v quickly or meandering thru Juno or the like...

For me it's the beats... don't get me wrong a love a filthy sound & a chest caving funk b line... I am more than partial to gated / fluttery synth & vocals too... but above all else if it's got weak beats then I'm not interested... funky filthy breaks or electro pulse for preference... 4/4 is too fluffy & boring for me... unless it's a proper stomper.

I voted Filth as there wasn't really an general option for 'sounds' - as in the main elements that make up tracks which aren't the bass parts.

Interesting sounds/noises/acid etc always get my attention more than anything.

Hi Scott good to see you here! :)

For me it's studio wizardy sound engineers, real vocals, producers & bands with there own personality

The Beatles
Arthur Baker
Kraftwerk
The Smiths (Johnny Mar)
Gammaray (Kai Hansen)
Soundcorp
N.R.G
Herbie Hancock
Roxanne Shante
Bob Marley

You can see a different mix of people there it's just the guys who know what the fuck what they are doing i feel & like but i like the odd tune here & there i could go on forever with that list well not for ever!...because there is more shit than good!...

Studio wizardy is what i go for more than anything it's the essence of great music which is deep in my SOUL!

Also honesty in music with an honest voice there is a lot of fake vocal accents around now who just do it for money! we are living in fake music times & it's shit!...There is no PAIN in music anymore!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Best thing to come out of your mouth since Biskit's cock  I agree with that quote 100%.

And not just honest vocals but honest music full stop. Shit that people take risks with or that is honest & passionate & yes with a touch of pain (blues & gospel/spirituals for example I love & are just about the most honest music out there... you can't play or sing the blues without going through the darkness - it's a reflection of what the soul's gone through)

Play what you believe in - believe in what you play.

I've wondered about this before - flicking through tunes in a shop and I don't think it's one thing on its own. You just KNOW, even after only a few seconds if you like it or not. If it doesn't make me tap my foot and smile within 10 seconds or so, I'm probably not going to like it.

I wouldn't buy a tune with the worlds most amazing piano breakdown in it if the rest of it was dog shit!

I've deffo got fussier about the tunes I buy and over the years my oldskool tastes have certainly narrowed. I'd say about 99% of what I buy is Italian, and I buy it coz I fucking love it. It's got to be an awesome tune to make it into my collection these days. :)

Aawwww Pauly now i would of loved to read what you typed! the tunes you are into are awsome! you let us down!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please reconsider! with fun! :D

lol, that was with fun ;)

Anything that alerts that tuna sense (usually know within seconds). Rattling percussion, over the top wood instruments (or whatever) adding extra rise filling that extra bit of air usually redundant in many tunes. Underlying basslines that bubble away stirring the pulses, big emotive wobbly shit ontop, warm strings, noises that sound out of place but work, noises that sound like they shouldnt exist. Non-formulaic, fresh, a melody that makes nothing else matter at that point in time.
Overall just an unconventional emotional racket that gets me grinning  :D

definitely bass line and beats for me, you get a good combo of those going on then you're half way there...its almost like you know there is some fat break coming and its gonna be good

On Cloud 9!!!
Ha this thread just made me think about how the itallians on the whole cant make decent techno lol..... have a couple of tracks that have decent basslines and beats but you just KNOW somewhere down the line theyll thrown down a real comedy vocal that spoils the entire tune lol :p

The initial hook could be anything for me, from an interesting soundbite to kick off a tune, to some strange/cool noise, or maybe a bassline from say ESG - Moody.

Usually though (having a love of breaks), that'll be what kicks in first:cool:
