Got A&H S2 and the effects unit remains untouched.

pointless! = mixer wise

effects = for people who cant mix!!

Marshal Jefferson? Every time i've seen him play he's used flange or phase. Or it could be filter or even EQ's with 2 copies of the same tune. Cant say for sure i wasnt watching closely, i was too busy enjoying it

How do ya think he makes the choon do that hi energy whooshing noise on those killer tunes that gets the crowd euphoric and all hands in the air?

Granted i've used filters (and even reverb /echo to collapse) for bringing a choon in or out (Lazy mixing, or or just varying methodology to keep it interesting, you decide )
But phasing or flange is for picking elements out of a tune mid - tune and emphasising those element. Each type of effect is used once or twice per set ONLY.
Overuse of any DJing method marks you out as a total spastic IMHO

I'm talking INTELLIGENT use of effects here, not some kid at Christmas type scenario where samples and effects get stabbed at every opportunity.
Effects are another tool in your box, using em at the wrong time is dangerous, but applied with some thought it can make something sound truly outstanding

Effects are good for the more skilled experienced DJs than your average standing still licking your fingers 4/4 beat basic mixing DJs

If anyone wants me to teach them how to mix/scratch & how to use effects professionally i charge £20 an hour now thats a bargain!...;)

PS:Would not mind just a touch of flange over my scratching & i love a bit of reverb & delay!...Nothing over used tho!...

karl - thought u'd like a bit of flange younge man

I don't have the flange effect tbh i don't like the way some DJs throw it on all of a sudden & very loud,i only have a slight reverb on each channel to create space i only use delay end of a bar here & there & scratching,it is all mostly to create space in my mix.

My effects unit is hardware which is separate from my mixer i have no effects built in to my mixer i have sends & returns which is better so i can plug in any effects unit into it & have real control with my hands.

I do want a phazer/flange effect for subtle use for that Herbie Hancock - Rockit fresh effect so my scratching has that nice phaze on it so if you know of one that i can plug my turntable into then into my mixer let me know! :D

I get this same lame assed argument in mountain biking,
folk get an Apollo FS26 from Hellfrauds for Christmas, birthday, present to self, because they seem affordable.
They aint.
Not when they break after a season of doing what i do, and my Orange is well in to its Fifth season, my On One did two years under me and a good year with Pepe, including the Alps and is still going strong with only a change of brake pads and forks

But
Where the fuck are people supposed to get the groundwork of skills once they progress from bridalways and canal paths, and on to Gnarry black runs?
How do they know they want to progress UNLESS they buy the cheap shit that gets them hooked, lets them understand why their bike cost £130 and mine cost 3 Grand new.

And now the next and very salient to DJ'ing point.
I have had people on Halfords specials keep up with me down black runs.
People with a natural flair, who have the skill to ride round their bikes deficiencies and wring the fucking things neck to get every ounce of performance out of it.
I got back to the top and let them have a go on mine to see what they can really do, and 8 times out of 10 they really fly.
And vice versa.
I was Dh'ing with a group of very skilled guys this year on our localish centre, one of our group who is good at getting big air and drop offs was giving us tips, and the favour returned in bits that we are good at.
kids riding past saw what we were up to, and we let them join us, swapped bikes, gave advice... If they asked they left that day with a better understanding of some particular skill set or other.

A group of Japanese tourists rocked up dressed like stormtroopers on Specialized Demo 8's. The team bike of Sam Hill for those who dont know, and these fuckers make my bike seem like a toy.
A very very sophisticated bit of kit.
We let on, in awe really, expecting to get our arses kicked. We were ignored and this group carried on on their own way. Fair do's, riding gods among mere mortals an all...

Not one of this group got above an estimated 10 mph (i'm at FULL chat doing 25 to 30 down there) and not once did i see a wheel leave the ground. Rock gardens where walked down, drop off's were pushed over.
They were shit. All the gear and no idea.
Maybe it was their first outing, loaded with cash, they told some bike dealer their dreams and not the reality and the shop saw pound notes.
This is what you need boys, sign here and here, you'll be the next Steve Peat.
I sincerely hope those boys went on from that day and sought professional tuition on how to ride them bikes without hurting themself or others, and looking like a tit in process, something they could have had for free that day if they only asked or joined in.
Maybe watching us and a group of 12 year old kids on shitters flying over jumps and rocks gave them the push to become better. Maybe one of 'em will be the next Peaty, or Hill.

Yeah, i cut my teeth on a Halfords type bike.
Yeah many people cut their DJ teeth on these £300 Numark or KAM type all in one turntable or CDj and mixer packages.
Some learn, get to understand the process.
Some dont.

Some go out and buy the top bollocks Pioneer CDJ 2000's and an 800 mixer.
Some might learn and get to understand the process, some wont.
Its horses for courses. So why belittle them?
It dont harm you in any way shape or form what so ever, unless your ego really is that fragile?

I am with you all the way Dave when using Fx's but only if they are used well & not over used fx's have nothing to do with a person being able to mix or not it is just something they choose to use to enhance certain sections or sounds in the mix.

Fx's have been around for a long time since the eighties DJ Jazzy Jeff,Davy D & Street Sounds Electro etc used them in there production its sounds great to enhance scratching as scratching is an art form.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Forward to 1:23 Davy D uses a flanger/phazer effect scratching with the fresh sample it sounds fantastic.

Same again Forward to 1:23 Jazzy Jeff uses a flanger/phazer effect scratching with the aaahhhh sample & again it sounds fantastic.

Sure am mate:thumbsup: Nice one:beer:

I've only got Ableton Live 8 software though and less than a gigabite of memory left on it's 500gb hard drive, so i'm just waiting for an ssd to arrive from Ebuyer and a kit from Germany which will allow me to stick 2 hard drives in the lappy and put the optical drive in an external enclosure. I should be able to make plenty of room for projects and any new software I need then mate, but i'm definitely keen to get lessons in production if you're happy to help  :D

Give me sometime to have a think about the 1 on 1 tuition then mate let me know when you have everything you need for your laptop then we will take it from there! ;)

You will need Logic Pro on your main hard drive, your projects & sound library on your second hard drive & a external hard drive for your sample library project backups etc & i recommend using Time Machine.

The most important thing at this moment is to get you up & running & started!
