cracking thread dan cheers for starting it :D

i do feel that we need a bit of a shake up and the obvious thing for me is to open things up for ppl to play other/newer genres than just oldskool. don't get me wrong i love the oldskool tunes and i always will, and i can understand why butty took the decision to change the music policy, but even at the time i suggested maybe having 1 or 2 nites a week where ppl were allowed to play newer stuff, i also suggested having a watershed after which ppl where allowed to play what they liked. hope u don't mind me quoting u here butty but this was what u said:

"I don't feel it would work mate, I thiink it would end up too confusing setting times aside."

i do kind of agree with that, i think the only way is for the music policy to be a bit more relaxed in general rather than setting certain times aside for other stuff. on a personal note (and apologies to ppl that play this style) i think that there is an over reliance on piano tunes, i have felt under pressure to play piano house, particularly on fridays, so i would like to see more varied styles on here and also a more open minded attitude to listening to stuff that u don't normally hear. u might not like it all but variety is the spice of life ;)

other ideas i've heard so far that i like the sound of include:

from northern star:

ladies night - think u might end up doing a lot of work tho debs lol

club nights...ie dedicated nights or slots to play sets dedicated to the clubs that we all know and love....shellys nights, hacienda nights, legends nights, cream classics nights, shoom, park hall the possibilties are endless on this front....

Also back to mine sessions where you dig out all youre treasures that you love kinda john peel styleeee would be nice to hear all the obscure tunes that other people have deep down in the dark depths of there collections and mix up the genres too

80s nights
70s nights

all great ideas :D

from ste huxley:

I should get my arse into gear and do my saturday slot more often. - deffo ;)

by jiglo:

a female dj doing a strip tease - lol ;)

by blue jammer:

What about having scheduled styled days, examples

Monday - Hip Hop/Electro/Soul/Funk
Tuesday - Techno/Acid/New Beat
Wednesday - Deep House/Garage
Thursday - Dubby House/Progressive
Friday - Anthems/Breakbeats/Jungle etc
Saturday - Anthems/80's guilty pleasures
Sunday - Chill Out/Downtempo/Lounge/New tracks allowed

i quite like that scott, except that prog should be friday or saturday, then i won't have to have a hangover on a school nite lol ;)

i can't think of much to add at the moment, but i will try, i know that ppl's circumstances change but i would like to think that we can all make time to listen to a few nice tunes now n again. nothing would make me happier than for us all to grow old together listening to great tunes and dancing round our zimmerframes lol ;)

ITS JUST ME MYSELF AND I

Been reading through this little lott and here is my thoughts on it O.S.A is what it is because of the simplicity of the place. I joined 2003-4 and I have seen this site rockit with loads of listeners and sometime none I have seen the site hacked and the site go down and loose lotts of stuff but butty had a back up but still alot of mixes posts and other stuff went tah tahs I myself have mixed it up and played some new with old and just new stuff and was hammered for it by a few people for doing it.
If my memory serves me well someone started a thread and my name was pulled out of the hat for mixing new with old as it was an oldskool site at first I couldnt really see the harm of a few choons that was making me wiggle on the dance floor mixed into the old stuff that made me doo the same.
I was told by butty nott to take any notice of one persons oppinion as not everyone felt the same but in future to play oldskool with the odd newbie thrown in and not long after that a music policy change came in and all followed as it was an oldskool site and thats what should after all be played.

On a personal note I dont always listen to oldskool and like to go away from it only to return to it again because its just to damn good to live without.

I love being able to come back to o.s.a and play old choons.

I deffo dont think the amount of listeners is what makes osa what it is, what I mean is there was a time when there was no auto dj and you got what you was givin when it was going and sometimes you never got loads of listeners then. No matter what you play people will either love it or hate it to be honest you can't win.

Im sure in the end its up to Butty and his Jedi to decide what happens "With great power comes great responsibility"‎

First off, I want to apologise to you slaggy. I got a bit too personal there mate and went too far, so i'm sorry mate:$

I don't want to see you, or anybody here leaving in all honesty:beer:

I know sometimes people don't always get their way and throw a bit of tantrum then usually say they're buggering off, and maybe they really feel that way at the time, but often when the dust settles they might then come to realise what they've lost or what they could lose. This site has found me some of me best friends who have all at some point shared one common love, the music - even if they've moved on from that, or moved on in life. so whatever anybody else might feel towards it, i've got a lot of love for this place

Surely you must understand that your metaphoric reed here does bend though? Yet if it bends constantly then perhaps it might as well snap, for it is clearly misplaced and not serving it's true purpose as a reed:S

Benny - You're one of the few DJ's here that I will drop everything and tune into bro:cool: Your shows here are always brilliant and right up my street with your unique way of playing (mainly old) funk, soul and hip hop, the origins of oldskool and for those tuning in not familiar with where the drum patterns, vocals, basslines, etc came from in their favourite oldskool tracks, it could be a real education. I'm surprised that your ratings aren't up there with the best and when all is said and done, these type of shows are usually my favourites - when dj's play something a bit different herephones:

That said, you can't blame the listeners if they tune out mate. If the listening figures drop quite a bit then that has to tell you something and it's not necessarily that you're crap (well certainly not in your case at least), it's just that you aren't playing what the public here wants to hear. I can't say that i've tuned into one of bren's new music shows and i'm sure he's a very good dj at what he does, but same again, he gets disheartened when he loses his audience here, or if too few people turn up and therefore, maybe, you have to admit that perhaps butty is right to keep the core of the radio here oldskool. If you play the wrong style in a club full of people and they don't want to hear it and leave, then you might well understand if you aren't invited back to play the same style that lost your audience:crazy:

That brings us back to the compromise where you could probably get a good following without alienating your audience.

Back to you again Benny. I always thought your funk soul hip hop style is perfect for a sunday chillout session:thumbsup: They're massive tunes that you play, but in the context of oldskool being the peak audience here, then your style fits that moodphones:

Anyway, you may agree, you might not, but we're all invited to air our views and those are some of mine.

The most light hearted comment I made in that post. Certainly the one I thought you'd take least seriously:thumbsup:

Edit: in reply to post 45.

Some very good set ideas have already been mention here, and I think that view is pretty universal:D

Why not set the ball rolling then and start a thread asking who would like to play to the style of a particular club night that they loved back in the day? Set a date and see how many sign up. if it's successful, then do another:thumbsup:

I'd be up for Pleasuredrome, Hippodrome and Legends nights for a start:beer:

.... and Picks Terrace if i'm invited back:p :D

In 1990.. 20 to 30 year olds were calling tunes from 1979 / 1980 / 1981 / 1982 / 1983 / 1984 oldskool

In 2000.. 20 to 30 year olds were calling tunes from 1989 / 1990 / 1991 / 1992 / 1993 / 1994 oldskool

In 2010/11.. 20 to 30 year olds are calling tunes from 1999 / 2000 / 2001 / 2002 / 2003 / 2004 oldskool

With that in mind, this site aint a true oldskool site, and will one day die away, as slaggy has already said, i think, somewhere. Everyones idea of oldskool is different..

I echo the words of a wise man... "A reed that refuses to bend with the winds of change deserves to snap, if it keeps up, OSA will end up proper niche, ".

I don't bloody know, ya dont come on here for a day and all hell breaks loose. Its obvious here that both sides are passionate for what they think about the situation at hand, which I suppose is a good thing??

The idea of this thread was for ideas about how to promote the radio a tad better and get folk tuned in. Thanks loads to all of you, we have had some good ideas  think its time to close this thread now and take these ideas away and decide what we are gonna try first.
