Unreleased Old Skool Choones

Hello everyone.

I would like some opinions and a bit of help please

I happened to catch a tune on the radio that was in the 2012 UK charts recently and it had a real old Skool feel with Rave pianos and your typical retro beat. Any Idea what it may be called ?

It got me thinking about how I still really love the Old Skool sound...

I wrote and programmed the music on Rhythm Nation (Featuring Emma James) by Bassrate. Before this single was another that didnt get a release called "Can You Feel The Rhythm" It was deemed to Hardcore and dropped. I wrote loads of Rave tunes that were along the tougher Prodigy/ SL2 / Altern8 tip, but they never left my bedroom. I have dug em out and I was surprised how good they sound but maybe its just notalgia ???

Do you think that there would be a market for unreleased genuine Old Skool tracks these days ? Or is it all about nostalgia and remembering the good old days ?

I never bothered with them before as Music moved on and I got busy doing other styles of music so i could pay my mortgage! - but hearing the tune the other day It really made me think

Any comments would be appreciated

Firstly Jonathan, welcome to the site.

I'll start by saying rhythm nation, what a tune!!! I think ur question will get a lot of feedback on here, I for one think oldskool sounds can make a comeback. Obviously a bit of the 'Nowadays' sound would have to be included.

Think the tune you maybe thinking of was Utah saints - something good 2012??

Yes it may have a chance in the mainstream but like dan says they would probably need to be 'jazzed' up , the thing is the memories of those days get shrouded in a mist , when I dug out an old tune that back in the day I had good memories of , it never seemed to sounds as good as I rememberd it, the memories of it allways seem to be better than the real thing.

so I think you would have to like I say and 'jaz' them up , if you were to try and release them commercially, and yes I do beleive some of the old skool sound still has a place in modern music today.

It's all about the memories , make your old tunes sound as good as the memory of it and youl be onto a winner pal , good luck.

I have heard the Utah Saints Track and its not that one. I will have to have another trawl around and see what i find.

I have worked with DJ's on an off for years and i always found myself imitating rather than originating. I always wanted to be the exception to the rule, but the laws of Dance Music govern creativity into a simple sentence.
"If you want to make it sell then it needs to sound contemporay - like the stuff thats out there at present, but with its own identity"

The benefit of this is that it can be mixed into many DJ Sets so the DJ's are happy (if they like it) and the DJ's will help promote it ....but its more difficult for the tune to be spotted from all the other tunes which use the same "ingredients".

If People started making Old Style Rave Tunes that were Authentic to the original sound of the 90's, which had creativity not just throwing samples from old rave tunes together, I believe that there could be a huge resurgence of the genre.

Maybe I am a minority, but I have a feeling I'm not, based on the number of members on here

He has Piano Rifs coming out of his ears !!! Nice solid clean production too.

The stuff that i am more into is the techno / rave stuff. I loved the tough quirkyness of it all. The bleeps and the "computer game" melodies.

I will try to get a few tracks put up online somewhere and then you lot on here can let me know your thoughts and get to hear where my head was at before rhythm Nation was born.

Theres a bit of niche market in the old skool hardcore heads that certain unreleased tracks get pressed.

try the forum at Back To The Old Skool and u will see there are many examples of this.

You wont get rich but perhaps you can get to let others enjoy your music and even have a vinyl copy and Im sure you will get some interest.

Would love to do an original tune with that sort of production and get earning some $$$$...

Still got all the kit from 1992 here in my studio. Akai Sampler, Roland Juno, SQ80 etc etc... Never sold it just added to it.

Anyone know a good Female black sounding singer in the Northwest ?
I used to know loads but they have all moved or I lost touch over the years.

Is that tune you posted an original or is it a remix in an Old Skool Style ?
