Oi oi!
Always wanted to ask ya this one. What are your thoughts on quite young (from 2005) genre of music called - Hardstyle?
If nobody knows what da fk am i talking about : Hardstyle is sort of hardtrance only with 150 bpm (im giving the exact data cuz i swear everygoddanm song is in this tempo).
It's pretty schematic: intro; another intro to main melody (usually with sbd talking if you know); melody teaser; full-blast melody; outro (which is the intro from the begging).
I think what is the most characteristic about hardstyle is the famous kicks and cheesy melodies (not always lol but worth digging out). Really deep overdriven bass kicks that distinguish artists from each other.
And what is most famous about hardstyle is not really the music itself, but the shows in which it's played. You just gotta see it. Type in google or youtube : Qlimax, Defgon 1 or Mysteryland and you'll know.
From oldskool point of view (at least mine lol) : it's got the groove, melodies fit (not all as i said ^^^), music gives you quite energy bust and it's not really that concentrated about money really... Because in 90' house music movement it was all about the good time and last thing you'd think about was money. Now here is pretty the same only situated in 20'. Hardstyle producers are fully aware that they won't make much money since it's all in internet innit. You can download any song you want for free, so they are just type of people who're saying :"we ain't going to make lots of money on this so might as well enjoy it ;) and we'll get all the shiny stuff from shows anyway".
sheeesh that was a quite long one.
Any feedback appreciated
All the best

for me..it about what I used to play...there is still good stuff to get into without a doubt...but there aint nothing in my record box that has a date starting with 2...lol...but deffo, a younger or at least more current dj would do it more justice...I like the nu beatz stuff about now...but the skillz involved in the mixing are fx based and eq drops...and thats it...you never see peeps spinning like Benny-Digital for example...scratch mixin and throwin down 70's tracks, untimecoded...real hard and intense skillz man...thats where I'm at...it's easy to slap sumthin together in wavelab and then drop it in....but after all that... A GOOD TUNE IS A GOOD TUNE...LOL...yeeeaaaahhhhhh golden buuooyyyyyyyy.

Well i gotta agree with that man. Mixing in this one is pretty basic and as you said it's all about turning knobs.
Actually i may be wrong in this one but there is quite narrow selection of skilled djs out there in hardstyle world. These end up playin at Qlimax or Defqon1 (one of the biggest events for hardstyle).

I gave a couple of tracks a listen, but it's really not my bag. If I was twenty years younger, I'd probably be all over it like a rash.

When it comes to new dance music, I'm all about deep/tech house, which is the complete polar opposite of this stuff :)

The scene sounds interesting, though. Similar to the underground psytrance scene, where a lot bedroom producers are putting out releases for free on creative commons licences. I like that whole DIY ethos a lot, and you're right, it is similar to the early days of rave in that respect.
