Was at a record fair in London yesterday and saw this 15min version copy of "Rappers Delight" for £7
http://www.discogs.com/Sugarhill-Gang-Rappers-Delight/release/74231

Is this rare?

Also saw a few other good condition oldies like JacknChill "the house that Jack built" (£4) "Grandpa's Party"by Monie Love (£3), "Rok Da House" by the Cookie crew (£3), Jocelyn Brown "Somebody Else's Guy from 1986 for £3.50 and Gwen Guthrie "Aint nothing going on but the rent" from 1986 for £3.50.

it's the same as this u.k. version

http://www.discogs.com/Sugarhill-Gang-Rappers-Delight/release/444040

the record sold millions of copies. not rare at all.

like the other records mentioned, it can be found on most high streets in chazzas and they're staples of car boot sales up and down the land. then again, it depends how often people look for this stuff.

please don't think i'm dismissive of your choices but they were all chart fodder and sold very well at the time. if i thought i could get between £3-7 for these records i'd be hoovering up all the copies i see, which are plentiful in supply.

Cheers - I didnt actually part with any cash because I wasnt sure - even though they are still gaps in the vinyl I've got in the attic. Will keep scouring....

Everyman and his dog seems to think that any vinyl is worth a lot now...cos it's getting "rare" ... bollox...lol...as yo say..keep trawling and you will soon fatten up your missing collection with 50p purchases..chazzer shps tend to have much better quality records as well.

Two things I've learned from record fairs -

1. Record Dealers have heard of Discogs ;) So any and every record they have they will know the value of. There is no way you are going to pick up a bargain cos the dealer doesn't know what it's worth. He will be selling it for exactly what it will fetch on Ogs - or more.

2. A lot of the vinyl sold at fairs is in rubbish condition. Even if it looks ok it's probably worn as fuck and once you play it at home there will be more surface noise than on a short wave radio programme. Personally, I think a lot of them use it as an excuse to shift crap, whereas if they try it on Ogs they'll get it returned with bad feedback.

As said, you often pick up far better stuff in chazzers as they are normal peeps' personal copies which haven't been played to death.

Stanton, get to know your dealers, they do get some gems and if your good to them they will always keep you in mind when looking at collections.

The current trend is to buy collections. This can lead to good records however results in cart loads of crap too which are what get pushed around through ebay, boot fairs and some record fairs. I have 100's of records im prepared to let go very cheaply as I want the space after buying 250 records for 2 records only.....

Records are becoming very expensive if they are rare, in great condition and therefore collectable. A worn out record is a worn out record regardless of what it is. The tosh is very cheap at the moment however the good records are increasing in price very quickly. It also helps to be able to clean and restore the records as some collections can be rough following storage just needing a thorough clean........

Now which records to record next from my JJ Frost collection at 40p each...........

True but the OP is particularly talking about pitching up blind at a record fair. Unless you go to fairs regularly and see the same dealers, and buy off them so you can check out their QC, it's a stab in the dark. And you can waste a lot of time and money filtering out the ones clearing out shite.
