Im currently writing an essay on castles, hows this for an essay question for you :|

'Discuss the design features of the medieval period and show how different styles evolved in different countries. Describe the development of castles/churches or civic buildings and note how the medieval lifestyle affected interiors of the future.'

Needless to say I havent got very far so far! :| :S

I love Japanese Castles. Their design pisses on most European castles in terms of defence. Take Himeji castle (1611) where there is only one existing access point, which is takes you on a vertical spiral maze like journey through many gates and ginnels. All the while the attack can be monitored from the castle top, deploying troops to masses of open fighting yards and easily defendable walls.

Though given the history of the Chinese manufacturing gunpowder; it seems bonkers that most castles were made out of wood. But artilery didn't play a major role in warfare till ~1600 about a 100 years after the Europeans had discovered how much simpler it was to blow chunks out of walls

Bonkers fact. Some castle owner made his tatami mats out of dried vegetable stalks; should the castle be seiged, the garrison could always eat the floor

The law building at Shef Uni is an old castle! The 'turrets' are colour coded, yellow turret = undergraduate, red = postgrad etc, so I go to my lectures in a sweaty old run down pee stained castle at the top of a massive hill every day. Its not a very impressive castle. But a nice traditional venue all the same.
