oasis I am the walrus
tainted love is also better than the original

you have got to be kidding me, john lennon vocal's on "i am the walrus" are legendary, they make the song...... i really cant see how you think a lennon, burgess, brown wannabe could perform it better than him:$

if you havent listened to "magical mystery tour" for a while mate you should and i think you'll change your mind;)

I think that the Acid Brass' version of Voodoo Ray pisses over that shite which Gerald released.
:)
Seriously though, I do like the Brass versions. I quite like the Senior Coconut Kraftwerk stuff, but have to be in the right frame of mind

: used to get hammered at a night called Sweat @ Brum Institute about 1994 (TC / Ed did you make it to these uns ?)

I only went to the Institute once, I cant for the life of me remember what the night was called though, suppose it could have been that though, maybe its as likely as any other as it would have definitely been around 94/95 :)

The Sisters Of Mercy version of Gimme Shelter is a towering, monumental piece of work, as is their version of Hot Chocolate's Emma.

Laibach's rework of One Vision, Geburt Einer Nation, is like Queen guesting at the Nurmberg rally.

Nick Cave's version of All Tomorrow's Parties rocks like a bastard. In fact the album it's on is a covers album called Kicking Against The Pricks, and all are good.

This Mortal Coil's version of Song To The Siren is in the top ten records ever.

That's off the top of my head - let me have a think about this one.

<edit> How could I forget Johnny Cash's version of Nine Inch Nails' Hurt. A recording to make you weep, and that's even without the video.

Oh and to answer the thread, I agree with whoever said Gary Jules 'Mad World' ... far more evocative IMO
that line "the dreams in which i'm dying are the best I've ever had" ... so haunting and sad :|

I also have quite a soft spot for Mica Paris' version of "One" by U2 , I love the U2 version too though

Theres probably more but thats all I can think off the top of my head at then min

Flunk - Blue Monday, can't say it's better, but I'd say its as good as the New Order version, just for being so different!

well, controvoyshal as ever, but I thought Gary Jules' Mad World cover was pure distilled toss. Furthermore, he himself is a miserable, whiny-voiced, shite-cap wearing ferret (or ferr-eeeeeeeeeeet, as The Macc Lads would say)...

Tears for Fears, on the other hand, are pop-music Gods.
Some Stipe-a-like American ponce singing & playing piano next to some other twat with a cello cannot possibly be an improvement.
That song is all that I hate about cover versions.
There are some good uns though...

Tool - No Quarter (Led Zeppelin)
Oasis - Cum On Feel The Noize (Slade)
The Cardigans - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (Black Sabbath)
Cyndi Lauper - I Drove All Night (Roy Orbison)
PJ Harvey - Shot of Love/Highway 61 Revisited (Bob Dylan)
Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2U (Prince)
Thin Lizzy - Whiskey In The Jar (???)
Ratt - Back in Black (AC/DC)

does impersonation of Emlyn Hughes on A Question of Sport...
oh oh oh i know that horse!

I've got a funny feeling the title of the dance version bore absolutely no relation to the title of the Mansun track.
Both versions was killer tho IMHO

Dy-Na-Mi-Tee-The Ukulele Orchestra Of Great Britain

on that. Bizzare, to say the least.

the slits - heard it thru the grapevine (not better just very different)

flunk - true faith (better than blue monday)

motorhead- louie louie

snow patrol - crazy in love

bobby womack - california dreaming (not better but as good)

and the best cover I think I've ever heard

fiona apple:- across the universe (beatles)

That will do for now but have loads of faves.

covers stink, simple as ...... a couple of years ago will young did jim morrison and ruined a classic forever.... take twat did the same with relight my fire they should be banned......
i have only ever heard good songs ruined, can anyone tell me a shite track made into a masterpiece by someone covering it..... i don't think so

covers imo are 99.9% SHITE...... they are sung generally by people who have ran out of ideas and are a bit short in there pockets...... collaborations are the same you may as well watch feckin pop idol week in and week out.... for me listening to someone belt out amazing lyrics and knowing that the artist/band have written them themselves is most of the appeal.

i have listened to jo wiley a few times in the live lounge and heard some of the most pretentious garbage by bands trying to make themselves look clever, an example embrace doing eminem..... for fucks sake sort it out your own records are dull depressing enough without having to listen to you drone out a feckin rap record.

Not a fan of remixes either. FPI Project destroying Back to My roots (Oddessey) was just one shocker.

Jimmy Summerville :cops: slaughtering I feel Love is another

Although whoever decided to replace City's "Boys in Blue" with a version that sounds like its been done by Mcfly then blasted out the tannoy at full time needs a severe kicking:mad:
