Its something pretty close to my heart and i totally agree. He is a selfish person but its not that hard to get yourself straight. Its easy to say to someone give it up but is that person has been at it for years its very hard to give up. It becomes there way of life.

Wise words. Alcoholism is like any other hard drug addiction IMO, our family is going through it at the moment

It is a way of life, Its destructive, and it renders you incapacitated,
so much so you cant even get to the toilet, remember your name, or your family.
Eventually you become hospitalised, and depending on your immune
system, it will determine whether you ever come out again

Through his god given talent Best has had the sort of adoration and privilege 99% of the population can only dream of.

I heard that interview on the radio 3 weeks ago too before he got the infection.
One caller asked him if he would change anything, and he said no, even to the alcohol.

He's a selfish bastard, he knows it, and he has to live with it

I have had to deal with it for most of my childhood years mate. It split my mum and dad up and this year killed my father. I tried everything to stop him drinking. I even moved in with him to try and support him but in the end we ended up fighting and arguing that much it nearly turned me to drink so i had to leave. My advice to anyone who has to deal with this is its there life and you cant do anything abut it, even if they stop they will always go back to it. You just have to be there and face up to the fact that in the end there is nothing you can do. A very hard lesson to learn at an early age but i swear i will never put my kids (when i have any) through wat me and are kid have been through.

Don't know what to say Andy, its awful and I hope things get better :( :(

There isnt anything you can do, its isnt anyones fault apart from their own. They dont listen to anyone, family, doctors, anybody.

The family member has pretty much lost everything, his wife, family, a successful business. He's been in and out of hospital for the last 4 years. All his money has gone on drying out, hospital bills, legal bills, he's has possessions robbed off other addicts and unscrupulous people.

To be honest, we are waiting for the phone call:|

Hope your family member gets through it mate. I know i have been fairly negative but i am sure some people must get through it.

That's exactly how I think my whole family felt about my uncle, now it wasn't alcohol that had my uncle off but it was still an addition and TBH we all knew it would be his demise....... when we did find out, I can't really say any of us were surprised!

His addiction, in the end, made him into a totally different person, not the same bright, witty and happy person he was..... shame really! It made him selfish as he was just abusing his body and puttin us through hell.... i think if he cud'v stopped he wud'v (so's not to hurt us lot) but i think his addiction took over and he just didnt want to! (if u get me)

so what i'm tryin to say is, we all stook by him (stupid as it may have looked) because we understood that even though he got the addiction though his own actions...... it wasnt that easy to get rid of!!!

I feel sorry for George best as he probably does want to quit, if not for his own sake for his family, but i think sometimes the urge is just too strong for some people!!! Anyways, he knows what he's done and he's suffering for it now!!! Can't imagine he's exactly pain free, can you?!?!?!!??

Fair play to ya's...The easiest route to take with any family members/friends that have a drug/booze prob is to fuck em off but what good does that do...its just another excuse for them to stay doing what they are doing cos they think nobody gives a shit anyway.

Its one of the hardest things in the world to watch someone destroying themselves and all around them and still stick around for them...worth it tho.

Not sure if you have had to do that lee but i tell ya its the hardest thing i have ever done and are likely to do in my life :(

The fact that you know no matter wat you do you cant stop it just tears ya apart. I feel sorry for anyone who is going through this or has been through it.

Aye , it has to be one of the worst things to witness someone destroying themselves and you know theres nothing you can do.....but to me what is worse is to see some one waste away who never had a choice in the matter.....

I hear what some of you are saying but whether he has money or not is of no relevance to this debate. It's ok saying he married a super model or he coule buy the best help available but that's not the point. If you have a disease, which IMO alcoholism is, then money is of no interest to these people.

I shared a house with an alcoholic, my uncle was an alcoholic and both people lived normal lives, held down jobs etc and had enough money to get treatment but having an addiction and money only means you can buy more of the thing that's destroying you!!! the girl I lived with (which some of you met once) just spent all her money on booze and her life revolved around making more money to buy booze but she didn't realise it. She was in complete denial. This has nothing to do with fame and fortune, as Retro said no matter how much you try to help, some people are beyond help but that doesn't mean that you have to forget that they're humans who have feelings and rights.

It makes me so angry that people sit there and judge against others just because they have/ had money that they deserve it!!!! Would you say a poorer person deserved it too???

Put yourself in their position, having every inch of your life interrogated and intruded on???? Give him a break.

A poorer person would not have had access to half the help George has had , and thats probably why people are less sympathetic with him ..I hope he does get better , i dont like suffering in any shape or form....Tis a reflection of our society though isnt it , the following of his condition is all over tv and the papers , ask Mother Theresa what she got

He should never have received the donor liver.
Most hospitals are quite strict concerning the criteria on which each case is judged.

As a lifelong unreformed alcoholic the outcome was inevitable and the liver should have been allocated more equitably.

If you are a poor, working-class, inarticulate 13 year old who, just once, makes a cry for help with a handful of paracetamol, then just hope that there is not a "celebrity" vying for the same liver. I guarantee (having witnesssed the alocation of organs) that the celebrity would get it. Even though his doctors knew he would continue drinking and destroy the new liver.

I'm not angry at George Best, he's a pretty sad guy with the curse of alcoholism to contend with. He's not a bad person, he's just a raging alcoholic.

I'm angry the fuckwits gave him a liver.

Doctor goes in to see George Best:

Doc: Got some good news and bad news. Bad news is you only have one hour to live.

Best: What's the good news?

Doc: It's happy hour!

its sad to see anyone go that way regardless of status- death by alcoholism is one of the worst ways to go as its slow and in the end there are a number of factors other than liver failure that can kill you with it.
I lost a buddy a few years back who drunk that much and regularly that his pancreas burst.:(
