firstly, full marks to tribal gathering for the choice of venue. its still kinda sad seeing that part of town with all the whine bars and the ‘prime location’ £155,000 apartments where the hacienda once was - but you couldn’t help but get a buzz from driving to that familiar part of town and seeing the venue was straight across the fucking road from all them great nights. nice one!

on the other hand, where do the tribal gathering people get off charging such extortionate amounts for drinks. it sucked. and there was so many of them with their little cyber haircuts and stack heeled boots! that kind of got to me by the end of the night... they looked bored and i wondered how much was a genuine love for the wonder years this night was celebrating and how much of it was a cynical money making venture?

on paper, the night looked like it was gonna be a top do. anticipation was so high after the big one at sankeys in summer. and then that ace night in october when manchester took over glasgow. we had come over from yorkshire about 20 deep. checked into the hotel, and proceded to build up to the main event.

which was dissapointing. i’m sorry to say it but the warm-up hour, bucky i think just didn’t do it for me. it was fuckin freezing, and peeps needed to get a bit jiggy and warm up. i didn’t see many people feeling it at that point. (at this point, we decided to send a man back to the hotel for coats/jumpers for the more scantily clad chicks we were with. the bouncers said: ‘you go out, you stay out’. we even had a spare ticket to re-enter and they wouldn’t have it. ridiculous).

anyway, when graeme and mike came on, the mood lifted, and the initial warm-up was textbook!! soul II soul, mantronix, the place was getting jiggy for about an hour superb feeling in the place. obviously from this point, details become sketchy - but there was no lift off! the gradual build that they had mastered over the years, and they used so well at sankeys was gone. it appeared a completely random selection of tunes was thrown on, with the occasional belter thrown in which livened the place up. i thought the sound was muddy at times, and i came away with the feeling ‘it was alright’.gutted.

maybe they are just getting bored of the ‘retro’ idea? after all these boys broke so many huge new records over the year, it must be frustrating for them to be seen as past their peak. do they want to be known for just doing reto? the novelty value of the sankeys do will probably never be recaptured now, specially since they are talking of doing more of these gigs together. also, graeme may have been tired form 3 gigs the night before? its a damn shame cos these guys can make the best time of your fucking life when they want it?
