Hate to see the labour costs for changing your gears in to a new gearbox housing, add in all the seals and oils... ouch.
I had to do an own fault claim last year... sticks with you for 4 years, ramped my excess up, but my premiums stayed similar to previous year.

I was just thinking the same thing! A few years back I ran into someone in my sister's car :$ , not too much damage to either car so I thought I'd have it repaired myself. Went to the local garage I had always used, and they quoted £150 (for cash) to sort it out.

Unfortunately, the woman I'd hit must have belted the crap out of her car when she got home, cos the quote for repairing hers was silly money so I had to go through the insurance (fully comp). That meant taking my sister's car to an 'insurance approved' repairer so the insurance would pay for it. Their bill for repairing the car that would have cost £150 locally?...£1152  They decided that loads of parts that were completely undamaged required replacing...nothing to do with a blank cheque from the insurance co, of course. :|

Moral of that story - every garage gets greedy when the insurance company is footing the bill!

i think you should have the engine ripped out and replaced with a 1.0, and replace all bumpers with those sausage things you get at bowling alleys. then you need to attatch a head strap to the headrest to ensure forward viewing, when travelling in that direction :p and you might be getting somewhere ;)
