re: is it dead???
i remember reading on iventi a while ago (year or so back) that the italian stuff was due to take off again in 2004.bit of a prediction eh???
this prediction was based upon the best (in their opinion) years of italian dance:
1984 - when all the best (?) italo-disco was released and was most poular.couldn't name you any tunes but from what i heard it was pap.....
1994 - when all the best dance/synthy tunes were about and the music was at it's most popular.
i think these 2 years have some significance,i have an idea as to why:
1984 - the italians had been making disco for a while, everywhere else had been doing since the 70's,they eventually came up with a formula/sound which could only be described as their own and a lot of people cottoned on to it and started liking it in 1984.took em a while to get it right but if you listen to it you don't hear music like that from anywhere else.
1994 - the italians had been making house music for a while but had only so far used the piano and vocal samples (to blinding effect might i add).you could hear this type of music from the UK too.they needed their own sound and it evolved into the 'synth' sound.that's where they found their niche.no-one else really made this kind of sound in such proportions, nor did they make it sound as good as the italians did.this evolved into a more vocally affair with the stuff from '21st century' and S.A.I.F.A.M being released (which was made by the same people as the old 1984 stuff was) and from then onwards was recognised as a genre of music.
they did miss out one (or several) of the major years...the '92 period.some great tunes released and that's the music a lot of clubs/djs based their style on: italo-piano.
you never really hear any of those people on iventi talking about that style of italian dance though..????
why is that....?????
someone did tell me that they don't class that kind of music as being the pride of their music.if you look at collections for sale they'll usually have some of/a lot of the old early 80's stuff for sale then it jumps to 93/94/94 and misses the early 90's out!!!!!
i think they were making tunes for over here basically and in too small amounts, that's why the tunes are so rare.
what's the point of this crack then...?????
well, for those of you who like the piano stuff,i think it's evolved into the funky/disco style house that can be heard today.(for examplelanet funk a bit back.that's alex neri init?he was behind loads of old piano stuff).
for those who like the 94 synth sound, that's all went a bit trancey.check out www.saifam.com for the new releases.or look at the stuff on BXR italy.that's g.bortollotti init?
mauro picotto has been through all the stages.from RAF - we gonna get, right up until his newest releases on nukleus etc. under his own name.
anyone who's waiting for a revival and wants to base it on 'iventi bloke's' prediction could be disappointed.......it'll take a bit longer than he reckons methinks.
there are tunes which use the same idea as the italians did.you get loads of cover versions nowadays of old tunes (including some of the 95 italian stuff).there's the same feeling with some of the tunes.the 'head hornys' stuff has similar kind of vocals and a lot of other stuff from spain sounds very italian dance influenced.in time you could see that style going more the way you want it to.
there's already stuff like jk,jilldreski etc. being re-released and being played in the clubs in spain.then there's the oldskool nights over here of course.
as for piano.i hope it does make a come back, but it's never went away really.just need those italians to start it up again and i'll be interested.the tunes would never sound the same though because of technology and quality of music nowadays.....it's just too clean!
whatever happens, with the massive interest in oldskool this country has,it won't be long before more young producers start making 'old' sounding tunes in the style of the tunes they're hearing in clubs.more of those tunes will get released and get airplay....then maybe the italians will cotton on and start making em all over again and everyone can have their time all over again!
what was the question again mate....???? is it dead..????
i think it's just waiting to happen.
f**k me i better get outside it's boiling out there, soz for rambling but anyone who knows me will know once i start typing i have to get it out of my system.....and yes it did take me ages to type it
all the best
