Who else suffers?
Yet again I have been awake quite literally all night -not 1 single minutes shut eye.
It affects everything.
Health.
Work.
Relationships.
Social Life.
You name it - it has a knock on effect.

I suffer very badly. It doesn't seem to matter how knackered I am - what I've done the day before - what's on for the day ahead - I just go through nights where I can't switch off & relax at all.

I know diet & excercise are important factors - but it's juts not natural to suffer this much sleep depravation.

I'm sure there are others out there... What do you do about it?????

Not quite insomnia for me, but I don't get anywhere near enough sleep at the moment, probably due to me staying up too late and getting up early.

I do have sleepless nights too though, but think most of my probs stem from my overuse of the shoutbox/internet and early start with my job:(

i used to suffer really badly but ive started a routine at bedtime starting with a hot relaxing bath with lavendar and then relaxing in bed try to do this at the same time each night so my body is in a routine.
you could give this a go, but i think debs is right you should seek medical advice

Sometimes I suffer from this very badly too, and 99% of the time it is stress related, be it in work (in most cases for me) or in home life etc. Recently I was away with work, and had a few important meetings and I couldnt sleep one bit. Managed to get through it, its amazing how you can get through it, and keep professional sometimes.

I even went to the doctors earlier on in the year about it and they gave me a CD to listen to, mainly a relaxation type thing. It was ok, helped a bit.

I tried cutting out caffeine after 3pm, not eating after 8pm, taking a bath before bed (cos Im worth it;)), reading a chapter in a book and starting down the gym again. The gym has helped loads, a real effort, but worth it. It takes your mind off whatever is preventing you from relaxing, plus it tires your body out.

It might be something specific that is preventing you from sleeping, be it an issue that you cant face, or it could be physical, either way, a trip to the docs wont hurt. Good luck with it:thumbsup:

Insomnia is seriously bad news and no mistaking.

I used to get it, not to the extent you are talking with all night mind, but it was still a major pain.

I eventually found methods to get myself to sleep when it happened though which sometimes worked.

Without wanting to sound all new age and shit I try to focus the mind into unfocused thoughts (I sound like Bruce Lee here :condom: ), so for instance try just to think of random people's faces or random objects or scenario's. Really try and picture them in your mind's eye (it seems to be important to the sleeping process), and then let the next random person/object drift into view and so on. I appreciate it's difficult if your mind is going at 100mph, but eventually it seems to get you off to sleep (it may take a while though, but it's better than not sleeping).

My theory on it is it's forcing your mind into a dream state (dreaming is after all just experiencing things in your mind's eye).

Amelie reckons it doesn't work, but I personally think it's just practise - you're sort of hypnotising yourself.

Insomnia Introduction - Health encyclopaedia - NHS Direct

I suffered from it last year, was mainly due to the worries I had, was going thru some money worries and I was getting down with it, used lay in bed just thinking bout it, then other worries would pop into my head, it was a nasty circle really...Im orite now tho, now Ive got all of it sorted like, its weird how everyday worries get into your head and as much as you wanna sleep you cant, the thing(s) your fretting about whilst in bed, you dont fret about whilst doing your normal day to day things, its at night, when you know your meant to be going to sleep, chill out-that all these niggles come cropping up :S

I can now fall asleep in about 10 seconds! No shit-me and Sam will be talking, I will say somat, then he will, hes laid there waiting for a response, and Im out for the count. (dunno if a few Js have owt to do with that tho :D )

Hope ya get it sorted out soon, like ya said it can have a domino effect, you get ratty from not having sleep, cant be arsed doing owt cos yer too tired etc etc...Have you tried any herbal remedies to help ya de-stress ?(even tho you may not feel stressed, your body may)

Uni exam time after a few bottles of boost a day there was no getting to sleep naturally lol, the best quick fixes I found were the gym, valium & nightol.

Like somebody else said the gym allows you to get out that mental, as well as physical tension & knackers you out. There are also those simple relaxation excercises you can do, where you tense up every muscle one by one working up & down the body then release. Didn't help me but helps some people.

Valium is a BRILLIANT quick fix, not that you'd would want to resort to drugs in the long term or even at all, but all your worries will float away after a good 10mg or so & you're nice & drowsy & really relaxed. You can get them on prescription, I did.

Nightol you can buy straight away over the counter, they encourage that sleep trigger moment...I had some weird experiences on this though lol...where my head would be fighting it, I don't know how many of you have or ever feel that split second moment between sleep & awake when your head & body are switching off, but its one WEIRD, WEIRD sensation, particularly when you try & fight it lol. But yeah nightol help.

Good luck.

I've never not been able to sleep atall, but went through a bout of waking at like 3 or 4am then staying awake till morning....
I used to just lie there thinking about utter rubbish; things that happened 10 years ago, stuff on TV etc... my mind was constantly racing...
I sorta learned to think emptyness and dull
out everything I were thinking and just think 'black' :| if you get me???

there is a good relaxation technique used,
you lie down and start to relax right from the tips of your toes feeling every muscle relax and untense, follow this up towards your head and by the time you reach past your neck (if you do it properly) you should either be asleep or very relaxed and find it easier to fall asleep:D

Well it seems asthough I have'nt slept for the past 3yrs if Im brutally honest.....Am a coach/trainer by day so you would imagine I burn enough energy and release enough endorphins for the whole town but NOPE nowhere close, Have consulted with numerous collegues within health and fitness and tried many a theory but to no evail. I seem to run on the longer longer longer lasting batteries lol.....it seemed to start when I was at Uni during exam time, the usual pro plus/redbull combo to get me through the nights to finish my Dissertation!!! After that had'nt the work to do and stopped it wiv the stimulants but still had the alertness ...I eat a well balanced, nutritious diet (when I remember) am a bugger for forgetting to eat through the day and at one stage thought the deprivation would aid mi' tiredness...NOPE.... Im regularly going swimming lately to try and knacker myself out(err bit cowd), ave tried the herbal/scent/meditation paths, which at one time did help but since had little or no effect....Ive had a lot of bereavement to deal with the last 2yrs and know this has preterbed me to a level...... ave' considered hypnosis although am sceptical to say the least...I don't help myself by surfin' the net till stooopid o'clock when Im restless but cant lie there not tired and find myself thinking allsorts????   :rotate: I dunno if living alone contributes or wot???....Find myself residing to the fact this is how me gonna be 4 the next blah blah yrs

Ive been one since i was 14, had all the tablets you can name off the Doc's over the past few years....They never work. Yes they get you off to sleep ok, but you still feel like you have not slept all night the next day. The best way i found to sleep was something my Doctor told me. If you have stuff on your mind...Get up and go out for a small walk, the fresh air is realy good for clearing your air, and getting oxygen to your brain. This helps you deal with problems on your mind in a non constrictive, and clostraphobic area.

I tried doing this for around 6 days before it took on any noticable effect, but it really does start to work very quickly. Never looked back for the past couple of years now, although i still do get bad nights from time to time.

Another thing is try to cut down smoking as much before bedtime...this also reduces oxygen to your brain, which inturn creates acctivity in your brain which keeps you awake

Hope that helps Marcus.....I feel for you m8, its not nice

I know exactly where you are coming from lol.....

I read years ago about the 'hole in the head technique'

When ya laid in bed, imagine that you have got a hole in the top of your head, which acts like a chimney for all the thoughts in your mind, when you start thinking " right, tomorrow...... ", imagine that thought goes out through the chimney in the top of your head, i even think "hole in the head....." & let that thought drift off through the chimney in me head lol!

This leaves you thinking about nothing, your head/minds just blank/black void of nothing, before you know it, ya alarms going off ;)

Works for me anyway :p
