Watching Jamie Oliver trying to teach some real charvers how to cook, and thinking eugenics has a place in modern society?

God, why is he bothering? (Apart from it's getting his fizzog on the box, natch....)

i think its a good idea..........maybe he can teach me how to make tea cake n cherry scones lol

im amazed at how little i know about cooking and yet i thought i was realy good, currys spag bol, chilli, sunday roast etc......but obviously thats not even touching the surface in the cooking world

id love to have cooking lessons and be able to dazzle people with my culinary delights....(instead of my norks)

Yes, I watched it and expected it to be bad. . . .but, not that bad.

I fully take on board that money is tight and a number of the people on there were either low income earners or living on benefits. . . . .But


To say I can't afford the money for fresh food, whilst smoking a fag or having a backyard full of beer tins. . . .well I mean to say!!!:mad: :mad:

Oh, but they could afford a fridge full of chocolate bars, a cupboard full of crisps and stuff from the take-away.


Eating fresh does not cost a fortune. Vegetables are cheap and go a long way. Also there are plenty of cheaper cuts of meat to use. How can making a meal be more expensive than the take-away?


Pasta, Onion, a quid of mince, tomatoes. .. . . healthy meal for 4

Potatoes, Carrots, gravy powder, Milk, flour, egg. . . .Meal for 4.

A few carrots, a pepper, a few mushrooms, onion, Broccoli and a small piece of rump steak or chicken breast cut into strips (often reduced at supermarket as are many things!!), some seasoning and noodles .. . .Budget stir-fry for 4.

God sake Baked beans on Toast is nutritional and cheap!


It is a lack of education, role models passing on knowledge, laziness and at times sheer stupidity.

I think what Oliver (no fan by the way) is trying to do is admirable, but will struggle to change the way some people eat.

He will sell a lot of books to people who already cook though!

Cooking needs to be taught at school, healthy school dinners need to be free to infants and juniors at school and some of the state benefits should be issued in food vouchers .. . .not cash. That would help protect vunerable kids in low income households .. . the responsible low income households would use them to buy fresh food anyway!

I had to turn it off, as soon as someone said they were unsure how to turn an oven on :confused: :cops: I couldn't bear to watch anymore. I agree with you on the takeaway thing Chris, it's so much more expensive to buy it like that rather than make it. Just an excuse for laziness really :naughty:

Are we really turning into a nation of lazy stupid people :p :confused:

lol, there's a lot to be said for natural selection. If you can't even work out how to turn the oven on then you might as well just top yourself. :axe::condom: :crazy:

LOL!

To be fair, a few on the programme really did want to make a change and improve themselves. One lass in particular, had a real natural ability with food and bags of enthusiasm. . . but then had money issues.

Was she "common", yes.
Was she poor, yes.
Did she care about her daughter, yes.
Did she want to improve their life, yes.

In the right environment, a few quid and some encouragement, she could do much better for herself.

There was a nice old bloke on the show who simply had never cooked because his wife had done it.

The problem is it's reverse eugenics isn't it, as they're breeding far faster than normal bods.

In a million years time we'll all be eating shite and none of us will know how to switch on a cooker :condom:

Naked Chef era.... Fuck me, i like this guy, he's fresh, he cooks great food, he partys hard n lives hard... Top geezer.. :thumbsup:

Later on, he's now a "Celeb" (arrgh i fucking hate the whole celeb thing) and fast becoming a condescending unlikeable twat. :mad:

The whole school meals, fresh food, healthy eating cost less then shite debate kicks off..... I'm starting to like what this guy has to say again all of a sudden! :thumbsup:

The highlight of the programme for me was the working mum who absolutely screamed Oliver down from the rooftops during the healthy school dinner debate, and was caught handing fast food through the school railings..
In a brusque North Yorkshire style she sat there and told Oliver exactly why this experiment is going to fail, no hairs no graces, just cold hard common sense and she told him exactly how it was going to pan out out.
Kudos to Oliver for going to the home of his greatest critic, facing her, listening to her, taking her ideas on board and eating a meal there.
Kudos to the housewife for not being dazzled by his status and hitting him with the facts.
By the end of the programme it was looking like her prophesies were correct, i cant wait to see how he turns things around!

Hey, I think you will find that Rotherham is in South Yorkshire.

We in North Yorkshire and more precisely the East Riding speak very differently to that. We still call a spade a spade though.;)
