For those of you who have seen the Yell advert, which I really like, I have spotted a mistake. Day-V- states that he is looking for a trance mix from 1992. To my knowledge trance was not a genre in 1992.

Wow you learn something new everyday. I thought trance was 1995'ish. When did the genre come into existance? Was it around even earlier than 1992?

Well said Coma. Those are 2 tracks that i instantly associate with 'trance'. A lot of good stuff coming from Germany in the early 90s. I think the trance sound morphed into stuff like this in the mid 90s - [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOEpkQGaQlY]YouTube - Sash-encore une fois[/ame]

New Yell advert track - Day V Lately "Pulse and Thunder"

Hi all,

I’m actually working with Yell at the moment so it's good to see you talking about us. We know there’s been quite a lot of interest in the track ‘Pulse and Thunder’ by the DJ in the new ad, Day V Lately.

It’s actually available to buy on iTunes (as well as a trance remix) at Pulse & Thunder - Single by Day V Lately - Download Pulse & Thunder - Single on iTunes. It’s currently at number 12 in the dance chart.

If you want a preview of the track, you can also listen on YouTube: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dnVwu0ag78U]YouTube - Day V Lately - Pulse and Thunder (original mix).mov[/ame]

Cheers,
Jonny

Trances roots are definately in the eighties. Tunes like the Eurythmics Sweet Dreams spring to mind, proper synth heavy tunes like that. Then theres all the really 80's stuff like Human League synthy stuff.

i was well onto it back in 92-94 era, techno and acid and trance played by DJs like Sven Vath on labels like eyeQ, Logic, rising high and harthouse etc... i just used to call it all 'Euro Techno' back then, including tunes like energy 52 (first heard that at still in school in '92) 'Prophet' by Sequential and even 'love stimulation' by Humate hearing it all on mixtapes with stuff like 'acperience' by hardfloor

this was a good comp back in '93

I was gonna put that  Although in fairness it really wasn't a genre then at all - hardcore wasn't even a genre in 88.

By 1992 I definitely remember people already saying that Sasha had started to play trance though, so trance as a distinct genre had certainly started to creep in by then.

Doesnt Heart Beat mention 'trance' as a music ?? Liaisons D - Heart-Beat (Vinyl) at Discogs

i remember trance once being described as 'Ambient Music with Beats'

Exactly

Even a few years earlier labels like Stealth, Music man, react, R&S, Lower East Side, mental radio etc were adding the phrase trance to releases and I'm sure there was a mixmag article about the new euro trance dance scene at the time.. Zee Germans, Belgians and Holland people were churning out trance around 92/93. Laurent Garnier, Dave Angel, Justin Robertson, Sasha, and co were all playing it. Its only a few years later the genre was attached to tunes that still sounded trancey, went on longer and were still played by zee Germans ;)
