Dave Ralph...Shelleys dj, top boy and sketchy scouser, can be heard on a few Shelleys mix's " can you get down off the speeeckers please"
Love Lizzy, think I have a likeing of peeps with a severe habit, makes good music and man...Scott Gorham is , IMHO, one of the best guitar players that has ever been.
Playing to a crowd is a can of worms, true...if your not going down well you gotta do somthin' trick and quickly...I seen a few DJ's back in the day get hoofed off the decks by the management for shittness...best to be solid and not try and ramble on like Sasha, your tunes should reflect the mood of the club night and if the system is a shitter, a nice short, smooth blend is a much safer bet.
I went to Renaissance from Day 1...it coincided with the demise of Shelleys, so yeah man..the early prog sound is deep inside my mojo and so is the line up, Sasha, Diggers and Oz were my dj family at Renaissance...I chose to see the best boys at their own club, playing their own style...Seaman at Shelleys, Sasha etc at Renaissance, Chris & James/Jez Heally/Emmerson at the Gardening Club...the list goes on but the idea remains the same...the top lads on their home turf is where it was at for me...I have been to big events, but apart from the very early Illegal parties that used large buildings, big tents aren't my thing, the event building is an important place and throughout my life I have come to the same conclusion...the atmosphere in a small, regular club night completely blows the hype and noise of a big sound system away.

Have you ever had a bad experience as a dj not going down too well? I have, as a guitar player we were once booked to play in this pub and all the punters were oaps' and in this particular band we were playing stuff from whitesnake to slayer lol, and the landlady behind the bar kept making a slice my throat gesture ( in other words get the fook of the stage). We packed in after 10 mins they paid us half and politley said fook off. In the end it only makes you stronger.

I was gonna ask who oz was, you mean ian ossia? I forgot to add him he's a great dj also, his renaisance collection 4 mix is pure class, I prefer it to the first 2 seaman disks.

Theres a renaissance mixtape which is a classic with ossia on one side and sasha on the other again in this instance I prefer the ossia mix, only trouble is the quality isn't that great, at least that's how it is on my version.

DJ Sasha & Ian Ossia @ Renaissance, 5th Dec 92

2. B.M.EX - Feel The Drop (Renaissance Mix)

6. Djum Djum - Difference (Steng Mix)
7. Dr. Atomic - Schudelfloss "i can feel it"
8. Bottom $ - Infatuation [Olympic Recordings]

2. LaTour - Blue (Hermes Trance Mix) "obsessional rhythm"
3. Floor Federation - Music For The Masses

5. Remake - Bladerunner
6. Trilogy - Good Time (Robi-Robs House Anthem Mix) "trilogy got you movin your body"

yeah man...bad experience with one of the guys working security, he threw my mates bird out...propperly dragged her off the dancefloor and chucked her out the door..lol..funny when u look back but not at the time...I went straight over and smacked him as hard as I could in the face, the first one was golden...but then I got religiously filled in ..hahaha..propperly poggered, thrown out and my record bag was lost forever..fkn dodgey East London crack den called Sunny Isles on the North Circular..suffice to say I never played there again...that was the first night of it being taken over by new management, it was a great club up to that point.
I got a couple of Oz tapes...I uploaded one with a link on here about a year ago, was really good...but I moved to London in '93 so that would be the end of my Renaissance era. The track list you posted is deffo in my tapes but I also have another...possibly a studio tape from Ossia...or a radio broadcast from kiss???

when you say end of your renaissance era, were you a resident? because when I hear renaissance I tend to salivate, the dj's they had there were great - sasha , john digweed, ian ossia, dave seaman.

The Renaissance is probably my second favourite club sound behind the ark, the ark will always be number 1 for me even thought the djs there were knowhere as near as big namewise.

A few of my fav bands, as you can tell I'm a bit of a metal head who likes lots of other stuff like dance music for example

AC/DC
Black Sabbath
Deep Purple
Depeche Mode
Megadeth
Metallica
Nirvana
Radiohead
Simon & Garfunkel
Simple Minds
Slayer
The Smiths
Vangelis
Whitesnake

I'm massivley into ac/dc ivan, who do you prefer bon scott or Brian Johnson?

60's bands I like, the doors, the beatles, jimmy hendrix, the beach boys.

I particularly like synth pop of the early 80's.

I despise pop music nowadays.

where've you been hiding?!

only deleted the bands that i know little about. all the others...cooooooooommme on!

bon/bri/bon/bri/bon/bri/etc etc

for me elder brother it's bon, all the way. even though he did go see them on the "for those about to rock" tour in '82. i was 11 then and had been listening to the bon era albums but was blown away by back in black. for those about to rock was one of the first albums i ever bought. even though me brother went to the gig he didn't buy the album. he loved back in black but even in 1982 i can remember him saying, "he (bri) ain't as good as bon."

after the second bri album i didn't buy any of their records. i went to see them in 1988 on the "blow up your video" tour at birmingham NEC. totally awesome, but still craved the bon era songs they did that night. fast forward to 2008 and i hear/buy black ice. FUCK ME! i know they'd been releasing stuff over the years but it was like they'd never been away. got tickets with me brother to see them at wembley in 2009. earlier in the tour me mates had seen them in manchester and another lad saw them at punchestown race course in ireland. the word coming through was they were better than ever!

the gig at wembley was probably (i try to think of others that were better but i can't) the best gig i've ever been to. fave band, fave songs, great weather, loads of booze, clean toilets (i'm getting old) and with me brother. it was like it had come full circle. him educating me in the ways of DC. him seeing DC. me seeing DC. then seeing DC together.

so bon or bri for me? i love'em both. can't split them because then you've got to split the band's era's. were DC better with bon or worse with bri? a question i don't want to answer.

in february i saw digweed in liverpool. i wore my "ac/dc est.1973" t-shirt. throughout the night various people came up and showed their appreciation for the band with a thumbs up. others chatted to me in the queue for the bogs about iron maiden and thin lizzy. eventually one fella came over and said, "what's your fave album". i replied right now...highway to hell. he nodded and then said, "what do you think of powerage?" i gave my thoughts on it being the forgotten DC album. he smiled, introduced himself and we sat off by one of the bars for an hour talking about DC and rock music. halfway through the conversation he told me he'd been testing me with the powerage comment because most people he saw wearing DC t-shirts were clueless hipsters jumping on the retro band t-shirt wagon. he knew i was the real deal when i replied about his choice of fave album.

my views on today's pop music will be in another post. :D

Dave Ralph...Shelleys dj, top boy and sketchy scouser.

great bloke who i know from my days buying records in bluebird and unity in liverpool. when he was at bluebird on school lane (early 90's) rob jay , also of this parish, worked with him and simon jackson. got to know him better when he worked at unity on bold street with john berry in the mid-late 90's. by that time i was working at richer sounds and whenever dave used to come in for tapes/cds or a blown tweeter for his studio monitors i'd always let him jump the queue (much to others annoyance!).

my fave dave ralph story is from when i was at cream in the late 90's. i'm upstairs in the VIP section (i'm a nobody but have always ,unknowingly, got friendly with people who are "connected") minding my own business at the bar. a voice next to me goes...

"alright danny, how are ya? thanks for sorting that gear in the shop the other day. d'yer wanna drink?"

"i'm fine thanks dave, just got one."

dave is talking to someone who is shorter than me with dark spiky hair and they have their back to me.

we carry on talking to one another oblivious of this bloke between us, when finally...

"danny...have you met my mate paul?"

"er...no, alright mate."

paul oakenfold turns around, shakes my hand and the 3 of us starting shooting the breeze. my friends are walking past opened mouthed and i can lip read them "how...does...he...know...him?"

Wow ivan you've seen diggers, I never got to see diggers or sasha live, they did play at the ark but that was after my time :(

Ivan are you on rate your music? if you are I'll add you as a friend, it's a great site for finding new music my page is:

Profile: mrpeach - Rate Your Music

Somehow I don't think djperkins will be on there, if you are I'll add you just like ivan. The only trouble with the site is there's not many dance music enthusiats but we can change that! :)

I've finally succumbed to the dark side, I've joined facebook. How do I add the osa link or whatever it is to facebook?

Most of the chart stuff for me is utter garbage, way too much hip hop I don't like rap it ryhmes with crap for a reason. I do like the odd ladytron track but thats closer to dance music and that lana del ray bird, not fookin bad (lookin) luv! :p

I am now gold hurray! hurray for me :)

many thanks to ivan and djperkins, but you are now despensible in my master plan, mwahahahahah! ;)

seriously cheers, :)

If you don't want to talk about pop music, I know this is an old skool site but do you guys listen to modern dance music which tends to be very much tech house oriented these days. I have an idea ivan does cause he said he saw diggers recently, but what about you djperkins? are your sets strictly old skool? I would imagine you probably have to be if your playing at old skool events.
