But this isn't for places of worship - temples, mosques, synagogues, churchs, whatever.

We could debate the pro's and con's of faith community grants but that is what we are talking about here.

We are talking about government funding for places of worship. And currently it would appear the government does not give grants to build places of worship. And more importantly it isn't giving any money to build this place of worship.

Well I assume that as it says 'for a range of capacity building projects' that it must include places of worship? To build community they must have places to meet and to pray etc?

i am a member of BNP, nothing to be ashamed about, i am no fascist. i beleive in a better britain for the british...stuff like: say no to anti social behaviour, more police in the street, no to asylum seekers. no to council tax rises, no to the veil, (for social reasons) Yes to a better NHS and education system. From the Telegraph..........
This country has bent over backwards to welcome immigrants here only to have some muslims and their self appointed community leaders working towards their own revolution for creating Muslim only areas with their own sharia law!:cops:
In fairness though these are separate issues.

The issue here is simply this big mosque. Now if we say that it is solely their own money to build this mosque (no matter how big it is) what reasonable grounds is there to deny planning permission? Realistically from a legal point of view.

Lol, why? It doesn't say that so why can you assume that?

It could be community centres, it could be sports facilities. You don't know, as such you certainly can't assume it to be places of worship.

anyway......aside from all the ins and outs of it, I just think its a very stupid idea.

They should watch the place like a hawk if they are worried about muslim terror networks in the UK....my university currently has the biggest fundementalist network for students in the country and they recruit loads of terrorists to go to the middle east......and its far from a big massive mosque.

Im just skeptical thats all and going off what I've been told. Some of these places are very ornate, beautiful, rich, popular.... and I can't see how the government would let overseas groups, benefactors and private money alone pour into them. The government love having their name stamped on these things, coz its all a bit multi faith and makes them look good.

Well seeing as the original piece I read linked the area and mosque to radical extremists then it's all part of a bigger issue. If radicals let proper muslims learn and study their heritage and religion unabated and without interferance then i'd have much less problems with it, but seeing as the mosque has been linked with a radical movement that has recruited extremists in the past then I see a very big problem with the project.

Why would sports facilities to exclusive to a specific religion ?

Also am I the only person that would love to see a mixed race / religion English Kabaddi team ? We would kick arse ! True integration :)

In fairness it was also the muslims fighting with us - certainly in both world war 1 and 2, and in fairly substantial numbers.

Now as for the BNP; unfortunately the BNP doesn't just stand for those things you mention. The BNP is simply a name change from the National Front (same members). Now if you want to talk about values that people have fought and died for - organisations like the National Front / BNP (albeit their foreign counterparts) are fairly high on the list of British casualties.

Yes there are major problems with intergration / multi culteralism / asylum. Some of those especially within the Muslim community. These need to be addressed. However organisations like the BNP and what they stand for will not help the situation, they will only make it worse.

But, do you think that could be used as a viable (i.e. could be backed up legally) reason to deny planning permission?

Betty personally i would be ashamed to be a member of the BNP but thats my opinion. Always makes me chuckle the BNP version of being "British". If you believe in a better Britain for the "British" then what makes BNP supporters any different than 3rd, 4th, 5th generation Asian families or the Afro Caribbean communities who have resided in this country for 300 years - all have the same concerns as you do (anti social behavior, a better NHS, improved education, better policing). The BNP are the sort of morons who give Britain a bad name - the sort of brainless narrow minded wankers who call everyone from the Asian sub continent Paki's, accuse every muslim of supporting Bin Laden and think all black men are drug dealers. Vote BNP and take the country back 30 years.....The argument here is about a religious belief, ie: a mosque - a centre of religious worship - thats where people like the BNP fall down and can't differentiate between religion and race :|

As an atheist, I have to agree with Amelie I couldn't give a toss if its built or not, but if it is built, lets hope its a building where people such as Nick Griffin (BNP leader) can go and educate themselves on the rights of different cultures to live there lives as they choose to do so

I really can't believe that you don't give a toss! Would you give a toss if there was another terror attack in London organised by Muslims?

I hate to give myself a bad name by saying this.....but there is a link. It's asking for trouble to build the biggest mosque in Europe in London. Whether or not it has anything to do with muslim teachings, muslim leaders, the koran....that mosque is going to be a massive meeting place for extremists to come together, bigger and better than universities, local mosques, community centres, and all the rest.

Just look at the list of Universities where terror networks have been detected -

Extremist groups active inside UK universities, report claims | Students | EducationGuardian.co.uk

British universities where extremist or terror groups have been detected:

Birmingham (Islamist); Brunel (BNP, Islamist); Cambridge (BNP); City (Islamist); Coventry (Islamist); Cranford Community College (Islamist); Derby (Islamist); Dundee (Islamist); Durham (Islamist); Greenwich (BNP); Imperial College (Islamist); Kingston (Islamist); Leeds (BNP, Islamist); Leicester (Islamist); LSE (Islamist); Luton (Islamist); Manchester (BNP, Islamist); Manchester Metropolitan (BNP); Newcastle (Islamist); Nottingham (Islamist); Oxford (Animal rights extremists); Reading (Islamist); Salford (BNP); South Bank (Islamist); SOAS (Islamist); Sussex (BNP); Sunderland (BNP, Islamist); Swansea (Islamist); Wolverhampton (Islamist); York (BNP)

mores the point.....most of them are Islamic or BNP.

I wouldn't care if they built a massive church because I don't know of any Church organisations in this country that are linked with terror and wanting to blow me up. I care if they build a mosque because I know for sure that extremists want to turn Britain to an Islamic state by force.....and that place would be a nice stronghold for them.

As for the "britishness" crap how can the C of E be the british faith when you have the Church of Scotland

What is it to be british?? Because it means different things to different people depending on where they come from, for example a glaswegian, a welsh person, a northern irish person, some one from orkney isles and someone from london or the midlands will all have different values for this

you cannot put it in a box and say "this is what it means to be british"

its a mosque and the taxpayer is not paying for it regardlesss of what anyone thinks so what is the problem?

if they built st pauls today do you think the muslims would be up in arms about the big church? would they fuck

as for the BNP, lets not even go down the "we're not racists" road when it is well known they are. they have been caught on camera being racist

when a young lad got murdered up in glasgow by some asian guys the BNP was straight up trying to stir up anti-muslim feeling in the city and were told in no uncertain terms to get to fuck by the locals

if the BNP stood for all that was british and they held commonly popular beliefs they would be in government now, they are not so i can only assume the rest of the country do not hold these beliefs dear

i want my country to vote for the SNP in may and get an independance referendum put through. does this make me anti-british or anti-english or a racist? no, it just makes me pro-scottish

i would NOT get rid of english folk or muslims or hindus or sikhs or people of african origins or asylum seekers, they would be welcome to stay and new ones would be allowed to come and live here, that is the difference between a real national party and a racist one masquerading as a national party

Amy - I despair I really do. So lets get this straight according to your stats and your interpretation of being a muslim, a new mosque will essentially amount to an terrorist training school? Its all a big conspiracy then? Bin Laden is sat in his cave saying... "I know lets build a £100 million pound mosque in central London because we can use it as a terrorist recruitment centre"..

What a load of sh@t. Listen carefully, a mosque is a place of religious worship - just because someone practices the Islamic faith DOES NOT make them a potential terrorist. If thats your take maybe we should have followed Henry the 8th and burnt down all the Catholic churches in the 70's and 80's that would have defeated the IRA? :| Its precisely this sort of narrow minded "News of the World reader" opinion that feeds people like the BNP.
I mean what if said everyone who enters a beauty contest is a bit thick......but hey

people have to be very careful when basically implying that you cannot have a mosque without having extremists meet there

its like saying all irish folks are terrorists, its generalising and stereotyping and, quite frankly, incredibly stupid

But, do you think that could be used as a viable (i.e. could be backed up legally) reason to deny planning permission?

No!

If I think about the wider issue then the old Vicar Of Dibley image of England I love is dying. It's a real shame and I think it's sad that rebels in the muslim community forced their own heritage into our lives faster that in other western countries and started to diuted the way of life that I grew up with but for others in other regions.

I know village life in the sticks isn't directly linked to a mega mosque in London, but it's the start of the tipping point from whence there's no going back. Their faith is taking over the world and one day instead of the churchbell ringing on a sunday morning that I grew up with, we'll have chanting 5 times a day like they have in muslim countries.

Being the biggest place of worship in Europe too sends a very strong message that I don't want. We might not be Christians as a nation, but christians are non threatening to my way of life, but the muslim faith might one day be.

If the plans were for a Swiss, German, Italian, or French city then it would just be a pipe dream and never get beyond planning stage, but thanks to our weak politicians and council leaders trying not to upset the muslim demographic in particular and less worried about protecting our own heritage then this will probably pass to the building stage, cost far more than the estimate, then have the British taxper pay the extra which will probably be at least double the original estimate for the project.
