oldskoolLiisa said:Yes that is how these clubs were!!!! If you find this offensive then sorry but it is true, I was a regular so I should know. I am not saying I agreed with the strict dress codes enforced but there was nothing anyone could do. Personally I hated the pretentious clubby types that hid behind they labels but inorder to get in to those clubs you had to dress to impress.
You are missing my point completely. My argument is that the whole ethos of old skool lies in its origins, and that is a movement that made all welcome. Individuals from many different backgrounds were united on common ground, and that was a love of great music. There was no inforcment of a dresscode, as that was not what it was about.
To me, the thing that you describe above, the whole 'dress to impress' ideology played a helping hand in the demise of old skool as i knew it. I can not imagine ever compromising myself in order to get into a club, more so one full of (as you put it) 'pretentious clubby types that hid behind there labels'. I am sorry but that does not sound my idea of fun. That is not old skool, sure they play the same music. There is the difference though, old skool is not a collection of records, its a combination of great music, sound people (all with a desire to just enjoy themselves) and an amazing atmosphere.
Old skool is waiting all bastard week to get to that club with your mates, cramming in cars, exited as fuck as you just knew it was going to be amazing. Old skool is hearing one of your fave tracks blasting out and looking at the person next to you, someone who you have never seen before and knowing exactly how great they feel at that moment. Old skool is standing on some random services and talking utter shite with lots of people, all of you just being extremely chuffed to be part of something, being mates, just because you are expirencing the same thing at the same time.
Old skool is not having to be something you are not as a prerequisite for club entry.
Look at Hazy, it is hailed as the closest thing to a traditional old skool night yet. I doubt the promotors have ever sat down and said to each other:
' I know, what this night needs is a strict dress code and lots of attitude, that will get the punters in!'
This night is so popluar as it has instilled the tradition vibe of freindliness and unitiy.
