This is the dilemma for me too Shooms. Now I would say a big fat deffo 'NO' to MC's in the main, but back then it was a different kettle of fish.

Man Parris and Eclipse is the prime example. Back in 90/91 he was (to me and me mates anyways) as important a name on the bill as the DJ's.

Some of those Eclipse sets I can remember sitting in cars listening to them on the way to or from somewhere and some have MC bits that just wouldn't sound the same now if they weren't on it if you get what I mean.

Rat Pack, Mad P aswell later on - fair do's, could still handle them and I can't remember a time when they really spoilt a night or DJ set for me. In some cases they even make the set what it is - eg. Top Buzz NYE 91.

I guess tho Top Buzz and Rat Pack etc. had their regular MC so it kind of works better that way. Its when they just shout the DJ name or a load of pilled up bollocks that gets me. When there's no creativity or knowledge of where to MC during a tune or break etc.

Saying that. There's deffo tunes that are more "acceptible" for MC'ing over like old skool rave from 92. Deffo NOT over warehouse/hac/hazy stuff from 88/89/90 tho please...

thats absolutely spot on that Ive got some really good hardcore tapes from around 92 with mc's on that I think are really good and fitting for the time but youre right in saying that some tunes should never have an mc spouting gobbledygook over them

BJ said something once that summed it up perfectly 'you dont need an mc at the hac doo cos the tunes will speak for themselves' and how right he was
